27" iMac
      #974319 - 06/03/12 01:40 AM

I really fancy one of these for Prop Reason. So I went along with my money yesterday and didn't buy one.

All my audio gear (Avid 003, Focusrite, MOTU 896HD etc) is Firewire 400. The iMac firewire port is 800, where I live there is no chance of getting a $5 converter cable. Someone may be going to Bangkok next month, and they might find one,and they might not, and Apple don't put one in the box.

Everything I have ordered by mail so far has failed to get here, or has cost a small fortune in 'import duties' including my Visa Card, so the internet is not an option.

So for now, I bought a 27" HDMI monitor and a firewire express card for my Vaio laptop and had to make do with that.

Moan over.

If I baked a converter cable into a cake, might it get through then?

You can buy an iMac but you can't buy a FW cable?

Oh I can buy a fw cable no problem. 400 to 400, or 800 to 800, but not 800 to 400. When you see how OLD the available cables are you can see nobody buys them, so why stock them.

I even got a fw express card which the shop had for 3 or 4 years before I came along!

Here, the shops do stock what they think will sell, but you get the one you and a thousand kids have been playing on, at full price, take it or leave it.

When I get back to the UK for a holiday in the summer I have a long list of cables, jacks, converters, and all manner of things you guys can pick up at Maplins any time you like.

The iMac can wait until then - actually it will likely have a better processor at the same price by then!

I got one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003WVOX20/

which is a lot smaller than it looks in the photo, and should be pretty easy to bake into a cake.

I'd prefer the cable version to save stressing the port on the iMac, but OK, send it in a macaroon, and if it arrives I'll eat the macaroon, and go get the iMac.

Good thing you have waited. An update is long overdue.

Ok, so it looks like I need to google a macaroon recipe. I do really good flapjacks if that helps...
