Securing USB leads for LIVE use.???? new
      #974333 - 06/03/12 09:39 AM
HI
Ive been using Mainstage and a MAcbook pro live for the last year.
LOving it...though there is a weak link in the plan......USB> i.e the connection on the MACBOOK.....

I rehearsed a live set in the calm of a rehearsal room ...all was well.
Ist gig on a bouncy stage.....nightmare.... the usb leads kept coming out of the back of the contoller keyboard (MAUDIO AXIOM)...so I taped that up...then the mac started to crash ...from movement of the usb connector....

I use a MOTU Ultralight via Firewire....so I had to do some mad, re routing and use the MIDI from the ULTRALIGHT to re connect the MAUDIO keyboard...

Ive searched every where for locking USB leads and found a few that require re soldering the FEMALE side with a new socket...
It is just so weak a system for people to advertise their products "to be used via USB live".....
GREAT in a classical church concert perhaps !????????

Some of these..

http://www.maplin.co.uk/cable-tie-bases-6235 stuck onto the kit to allow cable tying might help.

If movement of the usb plug causes crashing it is likely that the solder, or worse the track has cracked on the PCB. This had happened to my Evolution Ekeys 49 (there is an M-Audio clone of it).

Connectors soldered straight to PCB are always fraught this way, some connectors, jacks,XLR can be solidly bolted to the front panel but I have never seen a "ruggedized" usb or FW connector?

Dave.
