IODA & The Orchard merge!

Yes but two of the biggest & best independent digital aggregators (The Orchard and IODA) announced their merger yesterday.

Is this good...? (more leverage?)

I think you'll find they're not really independent - Sony own a very large chunk of the new company.

So called independent distributors have been big business for many years. I remember someone once telling me that the richest person in the UK music business at the time was the boss of Pinnacle distribution. Sony are already big in physical product distribution so it makes sense for them to also have a big online presence too - even if it isn't Sony branded.

to be honest, I see no particular ideological merit in something being "indie", as that could mean it's run by and handful of (or one) person, and those people could be idiots

What I want is something that aggregates to practically every site,
doesn't cock up my metadata,
and doesn't charge annual renewal fees, instead letting me pay once up front and then let those 'long tail' sales trickle in over the next few decades.

If Sony can provide that then good for them.
