Where can i find screws 4.7mm in diameter for a flight case???
      #974850 - 08/03/12 11:22 PM
Hi to all,
seems like this is the place to post such a thread: I bought recently a shallow rack 3U of SKB.
My Roland Gp8 multieffect is 7mm longer then the rack deepness so I will need longer screws for it.
Does anybody know where can I get screws with 25mm length and diameter of 4.7mm - 4.75mm?
Otherwise I will need to change also the built-in nuts.

Thanks in advance!
J.

Good morning Johnny.

That diameter does not seem to "belong" to a metric screw. The nearest is M5 but they are 4.8-4.97 major axis and M4 is way too small.
My best guess is 10-24 UNC. Here in jerkwater Northampton we are immersed in a number of small engineering firms and I usually just do a tour with my begging bowl when I want 1/2 doz hank bushes or similar!

Dave.

Google "SKB rack screws". Should find you somewhere selling them.

Also googling "SKB rack screw size" says they're an imperial size (i.e. old-school British measurements, as still used in the US). Hard to get in Europe, or even in the UK, but easy to order from the US.

10-32 is apparently the size you want.

Ah! 10-32 UNF is very nearly but not quite M5. I used to tap them out to M5 because the "company" screws were Pozi bright chrome and we could not get 10-32 to match.

Dave.

Thanks grab and ef37a for your help, I found this link which seems like a good place for my need:
http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/Rackmount_Screws_Hardware.asp

I didn't really know what to search for, didn't think about "SKB rack screws"...

Now will check if they have long enough screws to solve the length of my multieffect.

Cheers!

P.s. crazy stuff this "imperial measurement" I really wonder before how comes they use such a strange measure, and all the shops I went to couldn't be of a help.

"Crazy imperialist stuff"!!!??

Don't knock it mate! Joseph Whitworth invented interchangeable parts and mass production (H.Ford was very much a Johnny-come-later!)

Joseph standardized threads in things like rifle first of all and so we have the British Standard Whitworth. That came to be a bit coarse for smaller machinery so we got the B S Fine and for really dinky stuff there came the British Asociation thread, all electrical and electronic gear used BAs and it was so good even the Germans, Grundig used the BA #3 nut and stud in their tape recorders!

'Bout time those colonials went metric though.

Dave.

10-32 and 10-24 seems like too big for what I need regarding this chart (seems like being 10mm or 8mm ...):

Or am I missing something? Well, maybe this is the head size. In this case my screws head is 9mm which will be 11-32 so the closet seems like the 10-32, yes
