Need help with SOS on my IPad

I can't seem to get my subscription from my magazine to be recognized with my iPad. I
have a different log in name on my iPad compared to my log in for SOS, so I can't figure
out how to get my subscription working.

Ok I looked at the rules and found out you have to pay for a second subscription even if
you have a current subscription still active. Well that stinks. I tried the free issue and
really liked the way it worked with my new IPad. Are you able to look at old magazine
issues as well without downloading each one?

The iPad app is an entirely separate thing and, because of the way the app store works for
small organisations like SOS, we have no way of linking the app subscription with any
existing or future SOS esub, paper mag or digital edition subscriptions. Essentially, if
you buy an iPad app subscription, you're buying directly from Apple, not SOS. We know it's
no ideal, but it's all there is at the moment...
The only free iPad app issue
is the Jan 2012 one. All the others must be purchased, but you will retain access to them
afterwards as long as you have the app on your iPad.
Glad you like the app,
though. Hugh

Yeah I kinda figured once you go into the App world, you have to do things their way. I
assume that only issues starting with January 2012 will be available for the IPhone since
it has to be formatted a certain way? You get spoiled quickly as it is very easy and
enjoyable to work with. Then when you go to a older issue, you loose the nice work flow. I
may consider getting the iPhone App and not the paper version in the future, but for now,
I love the magazine. I am more old school when it comes to things like this.

The app is iPad only, but yes there won't be any issues before Jan 2012.

Hang on though Hugh, existing subscribers then either have to wait for their sub to run
out or buy the mag again!
That's a bit of a crap deal! Could you not do a deal
with Apple for existing subscribers? I know companies can give away iTunes redemption
codes so maybe readers could be given codes at a discount for their existing print subs,
at least then existing loyal readers aren't missing out. Or is SOS hoping people will
pay both?

Apple don't do deals. No really they don't. You have to be a very very very
high profile company for them to even consider it, and it's almost always at the company's
extra cost. While the redemption voucher idea might seem workable, I imagine the's a extra
cost to get the vouchers which, given how small SoS is, would probably render it non cost
effective on a small scale. Apple didn't become one of the most valuable
companies in the world by giving things away. They charge for everything.

Yes... they're
not great options, we know. But we can't link the Apple app store subscription system with
our own. It's annoying and frustrating, but it's completely beyond our control.

That's an idea and I'll gladly
pass it back to the SOS management for consideration. I suspect it may prove unworkable
and uneconomic in practice, but there's no harm in asking the question. In the meantime,
it might be worth calling the SOS subscription department and see what they suggest. I'm
out of my depth when it comes to that side of the organisation I'm afraid.

May I suggest if your subscription runs out and you renew it, along with the IPad app that
you get a big discount with the mag cost. I like the IPad app but I also like having the mag version as well.

Once we are able to link paper and web
subscriptions with the iPad subscriptions, we will most definitely be offering different
subscription packages including iPad subs.

Thanks for your reply; I found reading magazine's on the Ipad a similar experience to
reading books on my Sony Daily Reader. I like it, it's handy, you have tons of material to
read without the weight, yet I still like reading from real books and magazine's as well.
So I see myself getting both the magazine of SOS and the format for my Ipad. You can't
share your Ipad articles with people like you can share a magazine. Even though I have the
latest Ipad with retina display, there is a different perspective on photos of gear on the
Ipad compared to the way it looks in a magazine. At age 46, I am just used to the way
magazines looks and I appreciate them. However I am hestitate in spending the full cost of
a year subscription of SOS on the Ipad when I already have a year subscription of the
magazine and on line. Once my subscription has to renew and there is a get Ipad and mag
for only...... I will most likely take the plunge.

I enjoyed the Jan free version so much that I actually paid for a digital subscription as
well. However it only starts your subscription with the current issue. When you
subscribe to SOS mag version you can access the last 6 months on line as well. I am
requesting SOS to allow digital subscribers to access their older issues as well (Feb -
March 2012). This would be keeping with the on line and mag subscription service that is
provided.

Hi Glenn,
I really don't know much about the iPad app side of things, but I
think I speak for all of us when I saw that we're frustrated with the way the app and
esub/print subscriptions are integrated (or not!!). We're sorry about the inconsistency
between these things, but as has been said, at present it's beyond our control. Hopefully
one of the more app-savvy members of the SOS team can elaborate.
Cheers!

Good man! The iPad experience is
very nice, isn't it? -- I prefer it! And iPad3 ownsers will soon get retina-resolution
pages soon instead of upscaled ones too.
Quote:

Just as any
paper mag or digital edition starts with the current issue. The iPad is no different
there...
Quote:

It's five months -- everything
older than that is free to access anyway -- but yes, because we are an incredibly generous
publisher, we have thrown in a free eSub log-in to anyone subscribing to the paper
magazine for several yearsa now. However, the eSub is an entirely separate product which
we also sell independently in its own right, it's just that we've very generously included
it for free as part of the paper subscription package.
The issue here is that
when you take out an iPad subscription, you are taking that out directly with Apple, NOT
SOS... and I'm afraid Apple aren't generous enough to throw in an eSub access for free
too... What a bunch of meanies, eh?
Quote:

It would be nice from a consistency,
point of view if nothing else, I quite agree. But sadly, it's just not within our control
to offer that as part of the iPad subscription because there is no link or exchange
between Apples customer database and our own. We don't know who buys iPad issues or
subscriptions, so we can't authorise eSub acess automatically.
As Korff has
said, it's far from ideal, and a very disappointing situation given the state of modern
computer technology, but that's the way it is at the moment.
However, because
we're an incredibly generous publisher, and we really do appreciate the support of our
long standing subscriber customers, it might be the case that our very helpful and
generous subscriptions department staff might look upon a request for a free eSub
to complement a 12-issue iPad subscription quite favourably ... should you approach
them in the right way with the right proof of subscription...
I'm making
absolutely no promises though! I could well be talking completely out of turn with no
authority whatsoever and it would be entirely at their discretion...

How come I can transfer other print subscriptions from printed versions to iPad? The Week
for instance.
Edit: Just realised that the week is a newsstand app and this
is standalone. However with other apps like The Telegraph you can either subscribe from
within the app via Apple or you can, and I quote from the itunes store....
"3) Telegraph newspaper subscribers can use the app free by validating their subscriber
number and postcode within the app."
Will you be able to implement this in
yours?

May's edition has the higher quality retina clarity. I can tell you I clearly like the
IPad version now better the the magazine edition. Sorry for you guys with the IPad 1 or 2;
yes the clarity is just fine. However with the new edition, things are just a little
sharper which makes the reading experience more enjoyable. Not only clearer words but
sharper photos of all the recording gear I can't afford to buy.

It's because they use a different method of
creating their app which is very expensive but they can justify because either they have
far greater sales or can amorise it over a lot of titles within a group).
Sadly, as a very small publisher punching way above our weight, we simply can't play in
that game. It's frustrating, but it is what it is... at least until the third party
software providers involved change their stance.

You can give your
IPad to your daughter and buy a new IPad. Put it as a business expense and the chaps at
SOS will reimburse you. It is important for you to learn how the new IPad works with the
IPad SOS version. It will help give you new ideas on improving the magazine too.
In addition with dual video cameras you will be able to communicate on FaceTime which
will reduce your telephone bills. You could even do some SOS Rescue's with people that
also have a IPad 2 or 3. They could show you their studio on the Ipad, ask questions and
you could give advice. Send back and forth MP3's for before and after. Even get a general
idea on the sound in their studio. No it won't work with every situation, but it is a new
way to help SOS subscribers and no traveling cost for you chaps. We could send you photos
with these improved cameras that you could put in the magazine. I was typing this
initially as a joke, but you know what, in some circumstances I think it would
work........I know this method would work for some questions I have for my studio.

I can't see the May edition in the iPad app. I bought April, no problems. I've
uninstalled and re-installed the app, but it's still not available. Any ideas, anyone?

Did you buy Aprils edition or a year subscription? When I go to Magazine icon on my IPad,
I click on SOS. Then all the magazine editions for 2012 shows up. Check your settings on
your IPad regarding updates too.
