I'm using Ableton Suite 8 on my hp probook 4530s, corei5
sandy bridge,4gigs of ram and win7 sp1. Ableton runs really good but my cpu meter
rises up to 500~800% at clip ends, reverb tails, sudden silences, soloing a track and so
on. It's really strange to me that the system can handle lots of tracks and plugins as
well but it dies when the load is off.

I don't know whether this applies to you but I had similar problems in Cubase a while back
when using some of the Antress Modern plug-ins. I felt as though the less signal they had
to work with the more they struggled & CPU usage rocketed even after I'd stopped
playback. I had limited success with gating the signals when soloed but eventually
admitted defeat. Funny cos I could use multiple instances of iZotope Ozone & Nebula
(notorious CPU hogs) without a glitch.
-------------------- Not much in life worth running for. Or from.
If you want to test out elderly plug-ins for this problem there are several plug-ins
that can add a tiny (inaudible) amount of background noise ahead of an offending plug-in
design to make sure the denormal problem never arises.
A good example
that’s still available is TObybear’s P-Bugger, downloadable in his donationware
