Easy question from Mr Black thicky adder thicky new
      #978233 - 26/03/12 02:34 PM
Just a quick question if you don't mind. I've got my first gig abroad in the Netherlands next months and I'm having an anxiety meltdown, I will be playing live with Mac book pro Native Instruments Maschine RME FF400 and a Novation control Zero. Is anything other than Eruo plug convertors needed to make UK voltage work over there.

Thanks

Now to get my passport sorted

European voltages are supposed to be converging on 230V so anything with a CE mark should be fine. In fact, I've never known anything not to work when moved from the UK to Europe but I guess there must be the odd old bit of kit that won't like the slightly lower voltage.

James.

I've never had a problem with European mains supplies, other than taking care over Class 1 equipment to make sure it is earthed properly. Not all adapters pass the earth connection properly.

The only problem I've had was in rural France where voltage irregularities played havoc with my (hardware) digital effects. At the time, or so I'm told by my friendly neighbourhood amp tech a steady voltage could not be assumed outside the towns of France and Netherlands. Times may have changed, that was a good ten years ago and come to think of it I had the same problem in Liverpool city centre.

OMD once played in rural france and due to the electrical load (i believe it happened to kraftewerk as well with their orchestron and it was down to people using electric cookers, therefore creating too much demand) and therefore the voltage being to low, their mellotron would not go at the right speed. But then that was a motor driven device and most switched mode stuff should allow anything from 110-240. i.e., you are not limite3d to just 110/115 or 220-240.

Since I'm a brit living outside britain I can tell you there's nothing to worry about. However, I would double check if your power adaptors have the 110-240V input range to make completely sure you're covered. But saying that, I've never had any issue running 220 on 240 or visa versa. The only issue I've had was running a fixed US 110V transformer on a 117V-127V power supply in the caribbean, had some over heating problems and eventually m'transformer cooked. Earthing is normally the only issue as mentioned before in the thread. The European plugs are actually slightly different in each country and not all have the earth connection on them. And some extension cables won't even take a european earth plug either so just be aware of that. The "bathroom razor" shape plug is the shape that will fit in all the plugs. The round plugs that push into a socket with the earth on the side may not fit on all plugs.
