Hi, here is a better dithering test in the compressing level of popular music
      #980282 - 05/04/12 07:01 AM
Here is a dithering test with 35 lossless audio files.
Sorry I'm too hard to make a really full-blind-test so I wish you guys may test it as objective as you can.
These audio files are the same compressing level in the most common popular music loudness level.
These audio files are the exactly the same music and the genre is Hollywood orchestra.
There are exactly no any compression or volume level differences between the original 24bit and the 16bit files, and exactly no any extra effects added into the 16bit files except the dithering and noise shaping.

In this test, I'd just used these ditherings for test:
Izotope MBit+ (MegabitMax) 5.02
Waves L3 IDR 8.0.11
Apogee UV22
Apogee UV22HR

All the 16bit files are mastered in Sony Soundforge 10.0c except the UV22 and UV22HR files are mastered in Steinberg Wavelab 6.1.1.

The original 24bit master source was compressed and maximized in Sony Soundforge 10.0c.

So here are all the 35 audio files and please download them and listen:

And you may test by just your ears, or any softwares or equipments.

The file list:

01: The original 24bit source audio
02: Down to 16bit without any ditherings and noise shapings
03: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, No noise shaping
04: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, Lightest noise shaping
05: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, Light noise shaping
06: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, Moderate noise shaping
07: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, Medium noise shaping
08: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, High noise shaping
09: Izotope MBit+ : Low dither, Ultra noise shaping
10: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, No noise shaping
11: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, Lightest noise shaping
12: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, Light noise shaping
13: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, Moderate noise shaping
14: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, Medium noise shaping
15: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, High noise shaping
16: Izotope MBit+ : Normal dither, Ultra noise shaping
17: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, No noise shaping
18: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, Lightest noise shaping
19: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, Light noise shaping
20: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, Moderate noise shaping
21: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, Medium noise shaping
22: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, High noise shaping
23: Izotope MBit+ : High dither, Ultra noise shaping
24: Waves L3 IDR : Type 1, No noise shaping
25: Waves L3 IDR : Type 1, Moderate noise shaping
26: Waves L3 IDR : Type 1, Normal noise shaping
27: Waves L3 IDR : Type 1, Ultra noise shaping
28: Waves L3 IDR : Type 2, No noise shaping
29: Waves L3 IDR : Type 2, Moderate noise shaping
30: Waves L3 IDR : Type 2, Normal noise shaping
31: Waves L3 IDR : Type 2, Ultra noise shaping
32: Apogee UV22 : Low dither
33: Apogee UV22 : Normal dither
34: Apogee UV22HR : Low dither
35: Apogee UV22HR : Normal dither

So now I have to know about these:
A. which 16bit of them you can hear the best sounds?
B. which 16bit of them has the most highest fidelity?
C. which 16bit of them keeps the most details?
D. which 16bit of them is the nearest to the 24bit source?
E. which 16bit of them makes the best subjective feeling for you?

Thanks for you guys to help me to do this test.
Merci beaucoup!

That's a pretty daunting listening test so I'm not surprised there have been no takers. Hearing the effects of different dither algorithms is difficult with critical source material and almost impossible with material with high self noise.

Might I suggest trimming your listening choices to three of four? People are more likely to invest some effort that way.

+1.

I looked. I was daunted. I passed on...

then you may just focus to the normal dithering amount in MBit+
it is not necessary to be daunted
