New virus/malware in the wild

Just a heads up: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18034369#18034369I'm
infected despite running nothing. Apply have finally released a Java fix (it was patched
on Windows and other OS's in February!!) but it does nothing for the people infected.
Worse still, if you're not running little snitch or other network monitor you won't even
know you have it. Not sure exactly what it does yet! Also, the fix won't work for a lot
of older version (10.6.5 for example) so if you're running one of those you're stuffed!.

Presumably this is a SL thing? I'll see if there is anything on mine later, but my Macs
are on 10.5.

I've not noticed anything going wrong on my mac, but have been getting a load more spam
emails recently. Might not be related, but downloaded Little Snitch again, and waiting to
see if anything shows up.

I'm on Lion so it's not just SL. The point they were making
in the post I linked to was that Apple won't allow you to install the Java fix on some
older versions of OsX which is quite appalling if true. If they fixed their damn software
when everyone else did then this wouldn't have happened.
I've waited a couple
of days but looks like there's no fix for those infected so I'm gonna have to do the wipe
and reinstall...

Doesn't work; as I said this is a new one although it's probably related. None of the
steps in that link work and (as far as I'm aware), there's no guaranteed way to ensure
it's gone other than a full reinstall of everything :-(

thanks for bringing this to our attention. My computer seems clean but my son's had the
older one. The clean up procedure seems to have worked. As to the newer one in the other
thread, I ran the 3 hour trial of little snitch and nothing showed up. Since then I have
switched off the enable Java on my computers as this seems to be the way in for these
things. I noticed there is no fix for any system older than snow, and the computer guys
were all saying it's best left turned off. I notice Lion comes with Java off as
default.
I will get my son to install little snitch tonight to see if he has
the newer one. Is there any other way to find out if your infected?

yes, that also mentions to turn off java in the utilities folder.
I think this
is the older malware problem however, not for the new one.

I agree, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I'm running Symantec Anti-virus, and
it's more or less transparent, I don't notice it at all on my MBA. I've been running
antivirus software for several years now against the eventuality of a serious OSX virus.

I've been living with Sophos Anti-Virus for a while, and it has caused no problems,
comes from one of the more reputable AV software houses and is free. Only reason I can see
for not using it (or some equally good products from other companies) is religious
conviction.
At this point I'm bailing out of this discussion too before it goes
the way of the other thread on the subject. See you on the other side!

I think it is time to install some anti virus on my mac, going to try sophos as it's free.
What I would like to know is can I set the anti virus to only work within one
user account so as to leave as many resources free on the music account. I don't have the
most modern of computers so I think this is necessary. Don't have any additional
background things running in music account, but all sort of useful things in every day
account.
I remember a company I worked for installed Norton on a mac they had
bought for running sound and video for live shows. When I came to work on their next
production there was no way of disabling it within the user account for shows.

OK, I'll dip back in again because I can answer this. Sophos Anti Virus runs for all users
at all times; however it is a pretty light weight process and bits of it can be turned
off. There is a discussion on the Sophos forum here specifically about installing it on a
Mac used for audio work.
I personally have had no problems from it after a
year's worth of use but I guess you'll have to decide for yourself if it meets your needs.
There are instructions on the forum on how to uninstall it should you decide to.
