Can MIDI controllers send out fader messages to Logic? new
      #980966 - 08/04/12 11:45 AM
I am trying to get my iPad to control a vector object (XY pad) in the environment in Logic, via TouchOsc.

I can get TouchOsc and Logic talking, I have set up a layout in touch osc with just a single XY pad to keep things simple. However, the XY pad in the environment (the vector object) is set to receive 'fader' messages, not CC's etc.

Is it possible to get a MIDI controller to send out these 'fader' messages, or is this a Logic proprietary thing? And if not, is there any other way to do what I am trying to achieve?

Thanks in advance.

Ok. A fundamental feature of "Faders" (generically) in Logic is that they have separate input and output definitions - this means that you can use them as transformers, or that they don't have to output the same events that they receive.

Vector faders though are different, in that they do not have separate input and output definitions, they have a single vertical and horizontal definition, which iirc corresponds to both input and output.

Ok, so, we can't have separate input and output definitions on the vector fader, and we cannot send "fader" events to Logic over MIDI, as a fader event is an internal Logic thing and has nothing at all to do with MIDI.

So, what we do is send in CC messages, and convert those incoming CC's into fader events in Logic, which we then forward to the vector fader.

Easy way - take your first event definition, say you are sending MIDI CC 17 to Logic. Create a regular fader (or a transformer object will work as well), set it's input definition to CC 17, and it's output definition to the fader even you want. Now when this fader receives CC 17 messages, it will output the fader message you set. Cable the MIDI input path up to the fader, then the fader to the vector fader.

Now when you send in CC 17 from your controller, the intermediate fader will convert the CC's to fader events, and the fader events will drive the vector fader. The vector fader will respond and generate the fader events you want.

Thanks Desmond, once again indebted to your vast knowledge!
