Designer Delays article - May. Examples download faulty?

This afternoon I tried to download the audio examples accompanying the May 2012 article
'Designer Delays'. The zip file downloads ok but the extraction process throws up errors
on every file. I tried it twice, but got the same problem. John

Problems here also, but of a different sort. When I unpack the zip, there seem to be many
files missing:
1) Example 1b - which is actually there, but instead of "Vocal
with delay FX", it is "Vocal No FX with Metronome"!?!
2) Example 2 is just not in
the list (should be ("Vocal with Feedback").
3) Examples 3,4,5,8d are just plain
missing also.
There may be more, but I stopped looking. Maybe this is
something fixable ...
OK, some questions please:
1) What is the
difference in settings between the ping pong delays of 9a and 9b? 9b is so much more
subtle somehow ...

Others missing from my zip file unpacking (too late to edit the previous text):
14b, 14c, 14d - all the guitar tracks that have effects on them! (14 a is the dry
track).
15e
The tracks that ARE found in the zip file are wonderful -
makes me pine even more for the missing ones! (Can one pine for something they've never
had?)
P.S. I tried to see if the missing ones were maybe in the SOS
soundcloud bank ... but I wasn't able to locate them there either, though the online
article said they were up ...

Our website wrangler is away at the moment, but I'll see if anyone else can help to locate
the missing files in the meantime and flag this up for her return.
Apologies
for the inconvenience.

Just looking through the files that should have been zipped, and man those mentioned as
missing are present, so we'll get them re-upped as soon as we can. Sorry - no idea what
happened there.
Will get this done, and will then check on the other various
questions about the other files and get back... but please bear with me, as I'm trying to
finish the next mag today!
Matt.

Right... for an immediate quick and temporary fix, I've re-zipped and checked that the
file unzips OK — which it does. I've placed it in my public Dropbox as a temporary
measure, just so those who are interested can get access quickly:

Now, I'll check out the other related queries here, and make sure
all is present and correct before we re-upload to the relevant SOS page. Watch this
space...

Thank you gentleman!
Matt, just FYI - when I unzip the files from your drop
box:
1) The files 2,3,4,5, 8d, 14b, 14c, 14d, 15e are still missing, 2)
The wrong track is uploaded as 1b - "Vocal No FX with Metronome", instead of what the
article says should be "Vocal with Delay FX".
I don't know if this is a problem
with unzipping at my end?
Thank you for helping!

Hi Alexis, I'm told it's a problem with the filenames, which were prepared on a
Mac and which aren't readable by some Windows systems (though strangely I had no problem
on my own...), which cause some files not to show or not to open. Anyway, we're re-naming
and re-uploading so that they work. Apologies again for any inconvenience. According to the article in the mag that I have in front of me now, 1a and 1b are of a
dry vocal with a fixed tempo; the file 1a should be the vocal alone, whereas 1b adds a
metronome so that you can 'hear' the tempo. Example 2 should have the delay on it. But if
I'm missing something here, do let me know! Regards, Matt

Hi Alexis and others...
I'm told that the files have all now been re-named and
tested, and re-uploaded (to the SOS page, not to my Dropbox!)
So it *should*
now work fine. Could you please download the files again and let me know how you get
on?
Glad you liked the article, by the way!
Regards,
Matt

Will do, thanks! (Away this weekend
... unless I can steal away to a 'puter that lets me download somehow ...).
You
guys are great!

Perfect - all the missing ones are on the SOS website (haven't checked Soundcloud) - thank
you, Matt - woo-hooo!
This next one is a question for the author, Geoff Smith -
how were ping pongs 9a and 9b made? 9b seems like the volume of the delay is less? It
sounds much more subtle.
And thanks again, Mr. Smith, for such a great article!

Sorry, I think my actual question got buried in the above - can the author Mr. Geoff Smith
or anyone please help with the below?

Hi Alexis They were both done with Soundtoys fantastic Echoboy. "Example
9 shows Echoboy set to a PingPong delay with the Transmitter output style to give a
telephonic effect. On his mix of U2s 'No Line On The Horizon' Delcan Gaffney uses Echoboy
to add a subtle amount of ambience to the Lead Vocal "The echo is just a kind of warm
ping-pong sound. There’s no reverb on the track, there’s not even any feedback on the
delay, it’s all about the dry sound with a little bit of space on the side, provided by
the delay….. I’m not a huge fan of reverb anyway; it’s better to do the same thing
with delays.”(Secrets of the Mix Engineers: Declan Gaffney). Example 9b shows a similar
setting." To see a picture of Declan Gaffney's Echoboy setting go here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun09/articles/itu2.htmRegards Geoff

Thanks, pocketstereo!
What I was wondering about specifically was how the
settings were changed to get from 9a to 9b. Less feedback? More HPF? Or just lower
volume/less send?
Thanks -

Settings for 9a ECHOBOY - pingpong ping -1/4 pong - 1/4 Feedback -
just a touch lowcut - min highcut- min output model - transmitter saturation - min
So the main differences are the delay times for the
ping/pong and the output model type. Echoboy is such a great plugin. Geoff

Thank you, Geoff! I will look into Echoboy.
