MOTU Midi Express XT Parallel & Cubase 5 nightmare new
      #983155 - 19/04/12 06:14 PM
I have just bought an ancient MOTU MIDI EXPRESS XT PARALLEL, and am trying to get it running on my Windows XP Cubase 5 system. and its proven a week long nightmare so far!

I have followed the parallel port and IRQ setting tips, and it recognises the MIDI device and can run Clockworks etc. but does not seem to run smoothly at all - i.e. as soon as a couple of channels of midi data are running through it it starts to drop beats, chug along and cut out the sound, generally glitchy and unusable. I have tried loads of combinations of midi timecode, cubase sending it to the MOTU, the MOTU sending it to cubase etc. and cant seem to make it work with any stability.

Anyone got any ideas before I cause my brain to blow a fuse? You'll accrue some serious Karma

Think you've bought yourself trouble with that - don't think the parallel every worked that well post Win98, and when yo say Cubase 5, I am taking that to mean the latest C5 and not the original which used a parellel port dongle?

One thing yo might look at is to disable/filter out sysex in Cubase Preferences

And could it be anything to do with the printer port settings?

I tend to agree with the above. That's ancient technology and will likely bring you to tears trying to get it working properly. I'd advise you to cut your (hopefully small) losses and head towards USB - sorry!

If you're on a tight budget, but need a lot of MIDI I/O then by shopping around you should be able to pick up a Steinberg MIDEX8 for the price of a curry - it will even work on Win 7, though the drivers do not have official Steinberg support.

Better still, though more costly, might be a MOTU MIDI Express 128 - a pair of which grace my own studio and with which I am quite content.

Quick question for clarification - are you using the recent Cubase 5 with a USB dongle or the old Cubase 5 with a parallel port dongle? If you're using the ancient version then that might cause a problem running the interface through the dongle - if you are using a crack of the old version then that will seriously mess with the parallel ports rendering them useless for MIDI as it's essentially been "confused" by the protection hack.

Just a thought.

The other one would be to change parallel port modes - you can (if i remember rightly) choose between omni and bi-directional - see if that makes a difference.

Failing that i came across my Windows 98 install CD just the other day that i could lend you

I came a cross an old Win98 2nd Edition, with USB CD and put it on eBay - got £20 for it!

To check it out before selling I installed it on a spare PC and it booted in something like 10 seconds - come back Win98 all is forgiven!

Yes, after a week of painful faffing I bit the bullet and got an ESI 8 way USB model instead. Oh well, you live and learn. Anyone running an old computer want to take this off my hands for £20?

I doubt that you will have many takers for that TO - even if its heyday the parallel port connected MIDI interface wasn’t THAT popular

My first instinct when I read things like this is surely there is opportunity for some kind of charity to be able to take this sort of stuff and send it to developing countries, but after some consideration, nah, we'd only be sending them trouble.
