Cymbal Boom stands can make good mic stands new
      #984017 - 24/04/12 05:27 PM
Not as random an observation as perhaps it looks. Been enjoying hanging out here recently and just noticed a Sound Advice question about heavy duty mic stands (for heavy mics). Thought of a possible third option...

Good double-braced cymbal stands can be very affordable, particularly if secondhand. Considerably less than the prices Hugh mentioned in the article. And while I must admit, with no sense of irony, that Hugh's professional requirements dwarf mine to extent the sun dwarfs the moon, I think it should be noted that a poor little audio grunt like me also needs sturdy mic stands at times....

And cymbal booms are certainly farrr more stable than your average black mic stand. They can also be cannibalized and bastardized quite successfully

Anyway, there it is.

Quite true, cymbal stands are usually sturdy and very affordable, and I know of people who use them as mic stands with a bit of DIY. They don't have the reach of the higher stands of course, but that may not be require by all.

Often its not just the tripod that you need but also a counter weight to prevent sagging. Its always puzzled me why all mic stand manufacturers (not just the biggys) don't include a universal, threaded end to accept screw-on weights like some cymbal boom stands.

Good point. But in their absence these work fine for me.

Conversely, I discovered a couple of weeks ago that mic stands make completely crap cymbal stands.

Neat idea. I actually have a couple of weights like these from when I had my knee replaced and I needed them for the physiotherapy. Now I've got a use for them again. Thanks.
