Composing telly themes, when tragic has become the norm...? new
      #984504 - 26/04/12 06:35 PM
Okay, so we've all heard the efforts of over-ambitious so-and-sos with their sequencers and dodgy sample libraries, and perhaps a vision to become the next Mozart eventually... I'm thinking 'Emmerdale', which I can hear finishing in the next room. Hilarity is its only virtue, although the fact that its quality matches that of the show itself might also be a plus.

I like many of the theme tunes and jingles from the old days, from Radiophonic experiments to some themes from about the mid/late 1980's. I suppose I would have quite liked to follow in that tradition as a sideline (for fun), especially kid's TV themes, science and nature documentaries (now always over-the-top). But it seems it has now become stuck in a terrible rut and I can't see a way round.

Unless your theme tune for the next TV show sounds as dreadful as 'Dickinstein's Real Deal' (or No Deal) I'll bet it's highly unlikely you'll get it accepted.

Yes, the extreme crappiness is now 'the sound' they're looking for folks and it's been fashionable for the last two decades or so! They've now dropped the cheapo drum 'n' bass backing that became fashionable more recently, but the sounds are still awefull. This trend probably just happened by accident (or via the use of a few composers) rather than by careful selection.

That dreadful pastiche on 'Antiques Road Show' was bad enough when it's on real instruments, but the preference for the most cheap and clinically synthetic sounds is just never ending. ('The One Show' has just blasted out as I speak.) I could go on (and on).

Well in the old days it was a different gig. Musicians only, pen and paper, proper arrangers, live to a big clock - Ronnie Hazelhurst etc etc.

Mind you its easy to look back on those days through rose tinted spectacles - it was still considered muzak and rarely championed - except for the big hits.

But I agree, these days its a new low. They cant even leave well alone - Dr.Who, Snooker etc - but whatcha gonna do?

Oh yeah - moan here!

Haha, nice one.

It's nothing to be ashamed about, I knocked up a fake 80s action theme a while back:
80s Action Show Theme

One of my fave themes from back in the day was Dramarama. Stupidly short, but memorable. Probably the reason I have always wanted a vocoder.

Nice one, do more.

Check out my whole project too. François de Roubaix and others italian easy listening movie themes always do it for me.

Good stuff! Nice stuff there too Nathan

Film I saw recently on TV that I really liked the music on was actually a kids film, Fantastic Mr. Fox.. Reminded me a lot of Penguin Cafe Orchestra

Not for me it isn't. For many years I wore rose tinted spectacles but some bastard stole them when I left them at work one day (probably thinking they were cool sunglasses) and I couldn't afford to replace them. My eyesight isn't that bad, but they were prescription lenses. So, after nearly 2 decades of looking at the world through rose tinted spectacles, I've had to go without for 3 years...

Thanks for the opportunity to get that off my chest

Andy

Get nostalgic!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Music-ITC-Various-Artists/dp/B002T5FCES

or my personal favourite

I bought the DVD of this because of the soundtrack, a quirky series, but worth a viewing.

The worst TV Theme has to be The One Show. That tinny synth-brass fanfare really annoys me.

The best ever theme was Tales of the Unexpected
