Classic Tracks: Jazz Rock Fusion genre??
      #984601 - 27/04/12 09:31 AM
How about a look at some recordings by artists in this genre.. yeah a lot of them are American, but don't let that stop you..

This time - Al Jarreau
Mountain Dance - Dave Grusin
Tutu - Miles Davis
Spellbound - Joe Sample
Tribes, Vibes & Scribes - Incognito
Sun Don't Lie - Marcus Miller .. Eric Persing doing some sound design..

...the list is endless, but I'm sure the idea is understood

whilst barely any of those actually fall within 'jazz-rock', Mountain Dance is a potentially interesting subject because i believe it was recorded direct to digital 2 track without any overdubs or subsequent mixing. this was early 80s i believe when digital was still in it's infancy, and it is an amazing sounding record - superb production, given that there are no overdubs.

why/how they went about it may be a good article - i vaguely remember quite a bit of detail was given on the original LP sleeve insert about the recording process. GRP records were synonomous with high quality recordings throughout 80s/90s - it's just a shame that those early 'jazz-funk' tracks (and musicians) ended up morphing into a much lamer 'smooth-jazz' genre which has little or no artistic merit worthy of the jazz name...!

Sure - I use the terminology loosely; maybe a better wording would be: "soulful instrumental and vocal music based on timing other than 4/4, simple major & minor chords and which contain an element of improvisation and musical interplay unheard of on radio today"... but I guess that would be a mouthful!

For me, the aforementioned records have really excellent instrument sound programming, synth, bass and guitar patches. I think it might be interesting to delve into how these were created and who did the programming?

I agree, the smooth jazz genre has really emphasized the idea that 'getting paid' by any means is acceptable, but that would be true of most (all) popular music today?

I vaguely recall a Joe Zawinul article, delving into his keyboards and sound over the years .. could've have been a different magazine?
