Cheap rack ears for a half rack 1u box
      #984986 - 30/04/12 09:49 AM
I want to rack mount my Fireface UC on both sides but am reluctant to pay over £30 for RME's own rack mount ears. There must be a cheaper third-party solution, I just can't seem to find one on google/ebay...?

Canford have some half-rack adaptors, although most are around the same price you've already found.

If you're good with your hands, there's nothing to stop you taking a standard 1U blanking panel (cost a fiver at most), drilling four holes to fit the half-rack ears, and then cutting away the unwanted central portion of the blanking panel. Won't be as sturdy as the real thing, but it'll work. But TBH I'd be tempted to just hand the money over.

Alternatively, if you're not dead set on it being mounted by the rack ears, then you could just use double-sided sticky pads to clag it to the floor of the rack.

Would putting it on a 1U rack tray suffice? I have some of those here in Cambridge if you want to PM me. Though the two things together might then be slightly taller than 1U.

Otherwise, I'd be inclined to stump up the cash. It may seem steep for a bit of metal, but you can spend ages worrying about this sort of stuff, save a tenner and be annoyed that it doesn't quite feel/look/work right...

Hmm, thanks for the offer but I think you're right, I should just buy the real McCoy's and be done with it. Ultimately I'd like to slot another half rack unit next to it anyway...
