Downgrading from SL to Leopard "Easy?'
      #985406 - 02/05/12 03:25 PM
After receiving several replies to my post (listed below) it looks as though I'm gonna have to downgrade from SL to leopard as I can't install anymore ram into my late 2006 Imac.

Has anyone tried this process and how easy was it? My other problem is where to get a suitable Leopard install disk I've looked on ebay and it looks well "dodgy"

........................................................................................ .........

After completing a large film project I thought it was safe so I finally took the plunge and upgraded my 20”Imac from Tiger to Snow leopard with no major problems.

I did all the usual updates- Firewire solo driver, Steinberg elicenser software etc.

Before upgrading I could run at least 60 instruments with 3 instances of Kontakt 4.1.3 and Kontaktplayer 2.2.4 inlcuding sounds from Symphobia, Evolve, Evolve mutations 1 & 2, Hollywood winds, Reason 4 etc as well as Sylus rmx, Stormdrum 2
various plugins as well as a QT mov. without my computer struggling too much.

After the upgrade my computers CPU performance monitor is peaking around 50% with audio spikeing with just 8 instruments with the buffer size set to 2048.

I’ve done all the usual (repair disk permissions, Mac hardware test, trashed Cubase preferences) but with no obvious improvement I have also turned off “Growl” and “Norton anti virus”

Steinberg no longer support “Studio 4” so I’m now left with a project looming and No technical support.

Is there someone out there that can help me?

Imac 20” 2.16Ghz Dual core 3gig ram installed.
OSX 10.6.8

Firewire solo with latest 32bit driver installed.

Cubase studio 4.5.2

Regards

Gerry.

Not easy to get Leopard install discs. Snow is still available as you know, but Leopard is 2nd hand only. Also as it's the most recent software older Macs can run, it is quite in demand. I have an old ibook that I would like to get Leopard for, but to be honest Leopard costs more than the iBook!

Leopard goes on eBay for about £80 plus. Amazon maybe £130 plus. Also the prices are going up if anything - been watching them for awhile now, for the old iBook.

Are you sure Snow is the problem?

Thanks Fletcher for your reply.

Yeah I don't think my imac is powerful enough.

I've tried all the usual "repair disk permissions"etc. Everything worked great on Tiger which I could go back too but then the new software I've just bought"Symphobia 2" would be obsolete.

Sounds like we're both in the same boat!

Regards

Gerry.

yeah, but sounds like you need it more than me, I'm lucky in that the iBook isn't my main computer - but like you I've recently gone from Tiger to Snow on my iMac, my iMac being slightly newer than yours. Not had any problems so far.

Could your problem be to do with the 64 bit issue? Is there an option to switch your software back to 32 bit mode?

Hi Fletcher,

I'm not sure other people have suggested that but I thought that only effects PC users?
and I wouldn't know how to check or do it.

What do you think? I really...really don't wont to go down the downgrade path!!

Best wishes

Gerry.

sorry I can't help more, but would agree it would be best to stay on Snow if you can - if only as Apple no longer support the older OSX's (thinking of the recent Trojan security problem).

Why not try starting another thread in the Recording Tech Forum with a header regarding the problems your having with your hardware/recording software. You can mention the OSX Snow Leopard problem in the text, instead of as a header in the Mac music forum - a lot of people who might be able to help you might not have read your thread.

good luck

I found 10.6 to be actually faster / more efficient on older machines than 10.5.
