ZED-R16 MIDI section
      #985806 - 04/05/12 07:11 PM
I have a ZED-R16 and am extremely happy with it - great piece of kit. It feeds a new iMac (via the FireWire cable) that's running Digital Performer 7. I use DP7 as a virtual tape recorder and only occasionally use MIDI (mostly Reason), but I wonder how I go about using the MIDI section of the mixer?

Thanks in advance!

i'm quite jealous cause i want a zed r16

the midi rotary controllers in the middle of the mixer send cc messages...you'd need to connect the midi out from the zed 16 to a midi in (using say an m-audio midi in/out usb device which costs around £20) on your computer and "midi learn" on reason the knobs you want to control

however.....i'd probably buy an additional bank of knobs (like the ones behringer do) to be a 'control surface' and leave the zed to do what it's best at - being a firewire mixer

the info you require is all on page 47 of the zed r16 manual - available for download on the allen and heath web site

what is it you'd want to control exactly??

No, it's easier than that. With it hooked to a computer via FW, no extra MIDI interface needed.

I don't know how DP works, but in Logic there's a mode for clicking on something to prime a MIDI learn feature - whatever CC is next received is allocated to that control.

The bank of knobs, buttons and four sliders send CCs by default. The main 16 faders can be switched from audio to MIDI by hitting the appropriate channel's "Fader=MIDI" button. Doing so sets the audio throughput to unity gain. Again you'll have to set up your DAW accordingly, but no extra work is needed to get the Zed sending MIDI controller data.

I've tried a couple of times to build a template in Logic that will allow me to use the Zed's 16 channel faders to control Logic's mixer faders - and repeatedly it has been a frustrating head-scratcher that has ended with me swearing colourfully and abandoning all hope. I now just set Logic's faders to zero and mix by hand, or zero the Zed and set the faders in Logic with the mouse. Not ideal, but no amount of reading and experiment has revealed a way to set this up that either works or is easy to grasp. There's no included template, and A&H don't seem to have one.

I hope you have better luck.

Thanks for the replies - I appreciate your help.

What I'd like to be able to do is control the aux sends in the DP mixer with the rotary knobs on the A&H and perhaps the sliders on the Reason mixer.

I can find no reference to 'learn MIDI' in the DP manual - all 974 pages of it!

If it can't be made to work it's really not the end of the world as I'm very happy with my setup as it is. I was curious only to see whether I could use that hitherto untouched section of the desk.

Thanks again!

There has to be a simple way to make this work for you. I'm a Cubase user, so I can't help you specifically, but it is a piece of cake to get all of the midi controls on the Zed R-16 to control all manner of things in Cubase via the generic remote. I can't believe that something similar can't be don in both DP and Logic.

sorry - my error - didn't realise that midi was also transmitted via the firewire protocol ...opps!

for penance - i did find this from this very publication, which may help with your midi mapping!

apparently it's not as easy as logic's, cubases and reason's "midi learn" function, but it doesn't look too complicated

Thanks for the link Wease - I'll have a stab at it later.
