Any particular reason they have to be 24-bit?

+1 And to put it in context, when I saw the title of this thread on the SOS
home page as a recent forum post I said to myself 'I bet that's a new thread from Parco'.
And I was right. Andy

The glass marimba from 8dio is pretty awesome, really playable but I'm afraid its only
16-bit so naturally its a complete no go.

again, because double dithering in 16bit again sounds horribly noisy as some guys here had
ever said before (I've forgotten who said in sos) and most of my sampling libraries using are 24bit, so I don't want any
exceptions inside the 24bit mixing.

I think you're making too much of the 24-bit thing. All you're doing is limiting your
choices.

It's only marketing numbers. If you have a
decent modern DAW you'll be mixing in a 32-bit environment anyway, whatever your mix of
sources. I'm not sure what you mean by "double dithering", but if it adds perceptible
noise, don't do it!

double
dithering: 1. the sameples recorded by factories and down sampled into 16bit library,
this is the first dithering
2. after I've mixed all tracks, with the 16bit
inside a 24bit project, and down sampled into 16bit output and dither again, this is the
second ditherings of the 16bit library.

You will not hear the difference. Moreover these are only instrument emulations, so
nothing perfect anyway! And far from it actually, as even the most expensive ones do not
have enough velocity layers or playing modes for faking the actual instruments.

You don't want to believe this, but it really doesn't matter! Worry about the
music.

The raw samples should be optimised in level before dithering to 16 bits so the noise will
be around 93dB below the level of the sample. When you use them in a mix, the samples will
be reduced in level so the noise due to the initial dither will be reduced in level -
typically by 20dB or more. So the original dither will make little contribution to the
noise level of the mix. If you have any acoustic instruments you will probably find that
the natural background noise on these instrument tracks is far higher than the noise due
to dither. James.
