RAM Upgrades - are there differences between different manufacturers' RAM modules?
      #986318 - 08/05/12 12:46 PM
I wish to upgrade the RAM on my iMac, and I wonder - are there differences in speed, reliability, tendencies to crash etc...? Expert opinions most appreciated.

I'm looking at 16 GB (two x 8GB). The idea is that it will leave two slots free - also I could leave in place the existing two sticks of 2GB, taking it a total of 20GB RAM.

Below are some options...

Ramtastic (eBay): £83

Kingston RAM at Amazon: £147

Crucial RAM: £119

Easy one - just buy from Crucial, which is basically what all informed Mac people do.

I've had poor luck with other non-Crucial vendors, although this time around I got a defective module from Crucial who replaced it immediately without question and the replacements are fine.

Whatever you get, be sure you run thorough memory tests when it's installed to make sure it's working ok (looking at the amount of installed memory is not a good test) because there is nothing more annoying than random issues caused by defective RAM.

I'd be dubious of RAM on ebay. There's a lot of fake goods of this type sold there. I agree that Crucial are fine. I've bought from them twice for Macs without trouble. Back in PC days I've also bought from Kingston without problem.

Thanks guys for your replies - most appreciated. Crucial it is then...

Tell me please, how much RAM will I need to run Logic Studio? I would imagine that 16GB would be plenty, what do you think?

Logic itself will run quite comfortably in 4GB, so it really depends on what other stuff you want to run - big instruments with libraries etc.

8GB is good, but you'll need to be running in 64-bit mode to take advantage of it. I'd doubt you'd need 16GB unless you are running really big large-scale orchestral mockups etc but as it's relatively affordable these days - why not..?

I've had good experience with Other World Computing, and know others who swear by them. They are good at phone support too to make sure you get the right upgrades, and also do tests on seeing what amount of RAM the machines can REALLY handle, so I've got my mac mini running 16 GB and my older MBP running 6GB and it's pretty sweet, considering that I'd realy pushed the limits of 4 GB.
