drum booth idea
      #987019 - 12/05/12 11:43 AM
i need to build a drum booth in my room as i need to reduce sound levels, i'm not after making it sound awesome its purely to reduce the sound of my drum kit.

my room is quite large 12ftx13ft which will have a fire door soon and possibly secondary glazing (bay window, very annoying!) and my kit is in the corner of the room.

my idea was to use the big insulation sheets that are about 80mm thick you use in walls on the floor with a sheet of wood glued on top and carpet on top of that for the floor (same again as a roof above the booth/below the ceiling) and for the walls i was thinking of using basically patio doors/windows roughly 2mx1m size for the front 2 sides.

what do you guys think of this idea? would it cut noise levels down? i may even be able to have another glass wall around it with an air gap between.

also the bedroom walls are proper walls not just plaster board so fixing the 2 glass walls into the corner of the room would be fine wouldn't it? or would the vibrations from inside the 'drum booth' carry through the walls to the outside?

thanks in advance if you can help.

Even with all that, it will do very little, if you're doing it to stop annoying the neighbours. You say you're not interested in it sounding great, you'll wish it did after playing in it for a while. look into ready made booths, they cost more obviously, but they'll do a much better job. Look at esmono on studiospares for one.

Drums produce a lot of energy and you need both barrier and low frequency sound absorption technology. Neither is present in your question at the rates and levels drums require.

Remember bass or kick drums move from 30 Hz. - 8,000 Hz., snares from 80 Hz.- 15,000 Hz. and toms from 50 Hz. - 15,000 Hz. SPL levels are high and both barrier or sound isolation technology to keep the drum sound from neighbors and proper low frequency technology inside the room need to be employed.

If you are not prepared to get out a saw and hammer, then go for the suggested pre-made drum booth. It will save you time and money in the long and short run. Make sure you physically decouple the pre-made drum room from your existing room with vibration isolation technology.

Regards,
Mike
