HD expansion, is this a good idea? (suggestions welcome)
      #987026 - 12/05/12 12:25 PM
Hi All,

I recently posted about 16GB of memory for my MBP which was since delivered from OCW and will be installed next week.

Now I am looking to expand my storage system as my current 5TB over multiple disks is near full.

I was looking for a FW solution and one that Pro Tools 10 will agree with. I followed avid's guide on HD's and again came back to OCW and this one:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400 _USB

I was about ready to order the 3GB version of this when I came upon this housing:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW936AL2K/< br />
Also OCW and was thinking to then fill this with 2 x 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm disks.

The latter would be a little more costly but give me double the capacity which would be welcome as backups of the show I'm currently working on already reached 500GB and I suspect there will be another 300 or so GB to add to that before the summer is over amongst other projects that also eat space....

So my question I guess is if this is a good option and if the Barracuda disks are reliable or if I should be looking at another solution?

No disk is reliable enough not to need a backup.

There's no reason the Barracuda drives shouldn't be as good as any if mounted sensibly with sufficient ventilation, and treated with respect.

Ok, cheers. I just wondered if they were ok ass when I add it up, for only £40 more of the total of piecing it together I can get OWC's HD's that have been tested by Avid and was wondering if it's worth the difference.

Especially as we are currently using 2 x 2TB Barracuda drives on a show and they have been reliable the last 8 months (the same sadly couldn't be said of the 500GB variety we also use two off and have now had 4 replacements... Bad luck?

I am aware of backing up and all my important projects are in at least 2 locations and a cloud storage solution...

Does anyone have any other suggestions in terms of HD casing?
Some people told me they use the Barracuda drives and just get cheap FW cases. However, when I do a quick google search and/ or ebay search it seems nothing suitable comes up. Any suggestions?
