Will this work??
      #987404 - 14/05/12 07:59 PM
I'm completely confused whether a mixing desk will work as an audio-interface/sound card? i originally got some free lessons on live sound recoding a few years ago and I'm 99% certain it was 'simply' microphone into Mixing desk into computer... press record. Could this have been the case? I have been told that this doesn't work!? Does it?

If the answer is yes/sometimes... will this do the job to record multiple inputs when recording drums? http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/digital_detail.asp?stock=05042911224918< br />
I am extremely confused as i have heard the Mackie Onyx WILL do the job... though it is more than id like to pay and doesn't have enough mic inputs for my desired needs/setup.

Quick answers and any further information I may consider useful... including any experience with this machine, would be very helpful.

Thank you
Aaron G

I don't think that mixer you linked to has USB. so it won't do what you want. There are other Mackie mixers with USB, but I think it is only 2 channels.

Allen & Heath do the ZED R16 which gives you 18 in and 18 out.

or.. you could buy an Audio Interface instead of a mixer. One with enough mic pre amps built in, and use that.

What you need is an audio interface to convert the analogue signal from your mixer into the digital realm.

These can be stand alone or sometimes mixers have them built in. So if the mixer has FireWire or USB out then it will be able to communicate with the computer. But beware, cheaper USB mixers may only present a stereo mix to the computer not all the individual channels.

And no the mixer you mention will not work, it's analogue only.

What is your budget?

How many channels do you need to record at once?

Does you computer have a firewire port or USB2 or PCI/PCIe slot?
