Replace internal Hard Drive in Macbook Pro
      #987973 - 17/05/12 11:33 AM
Does anyone know if this Hard Drive will fit and work ok in a Macbook Pro (mid-2009)?

Hitachi Travelstar Internal 2.5" SATA Hard Drive 750GB - SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400RPM

here is a link to the item at PC World

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hitachi-travelstar-internal-2-5-sata-hard-dr ive-750gb-10945083-pdt.html

Alternatively, can anyone recommend a better drive, ideally 1TB, 7200RPM?

Should be fine - be careful with the 1TB drives, as they are often too thick to fit in laptops. I *think* you'll be ok in the 2009, but check the thickness - 9mm is fine, 12 wouldn't fit in the earlier laptops, but I think the unibody ones are ok...

the largest one that would fit in mine was a 750GB drive

and that wasn't at 7,200 - so definitely check -

I have a 750 7200 in mine, and had a 5400 Hitachi Travelstar 750 in my old 2008 MBP (the 1TB drives definitely wouldn't fit in that one...)

A 12mm Toshiba 1TB drive (5400rpm) will fit in the unibody 17" MacBook Pro's.
I've fitted one to my Quad core i7 and my wife's 2.6 core 2 duo and they work fine (5 minute job).
I'm not sure that'll be the same size case for the 15" MacBook Pro's though, so (as others have said), check it out prior to purchase.
To the best of my knowledge there isn't a 2.5" 1TB drive that runs at 7200rpm.
I think the biggest 7200 drive available is 750GB - to get the extra 250GB you'll have to go for a 5400 drive.
Hope this helps

Geoff

Question though - is the SATA controller in the 2009 MBP SATA 3.0 compatible or will it just clock down to 2.0 rates?
I upgraded my MBP drive a while back and if I recall correctly, my mac-guru mate was telling me to ignore SATA 3.0 and go for a WD 7200 RPM drive instead.

I assume you've seen the install guides here?:

I ended up putting one of these Samsung Spinpoint 1TB 5400RPM (9.5mm) drives in.. it fits and works ok.

The installation was easy enough
