Trouble clocking Audient Black ADC with MOTU 2408 and Time Machine
      #988293 - 18/05/12 09:54 PM
So... I fear not many people will be able to help me here (I've sent something off to the guys at Audient) as the Black series didn't ever seem to take off (a sin in my eyes, the black stuff is fantastic)

I have a fully loaded BR10 Rack with an ADC and Time Machine Module fitted. The Time machine on the last slot and the ADC on the second last.

I have the Black hooked up to a Rosendahl Nanoclocks as well as the MOTU 2408.

I'm going ADAT lightpipe out of the ADC into Bank B on the 2408 but all I get is digital hash across all 8 channels. Tried a load bunch of different optical cables to no avail.

Tricky one!

Anybody?

I'm keen to try out the ADC as I'm looking to upgrade my main stereo ADC from the Motu to something with a bit more 'depth' and detail, so its worth a try for the comparison!

So what is the clock setting on the motu?

Its clocked to wordclock at 44.1. Should I try clocking from ADAT on the MOTU?

Yes. It is possible that clock phase shifts between the direct word clock to the motu and via the audient converter is causing the problem.

Have you checked that the motu's adat input works with other adat sources and that the audient adat output works with other adat inputs?

Thanks Hugh, I've checked the 3 banks on the MOTU and they are all the same. Other than the MOTU I don't have anymore ADAT ins or outs to try anymore unless I drag my Mackie D8B in from home or take the black there (both a bit of a nightmare)

Clearly the mouth is struggling to decode the adat data. It could because of a clocking issue, but it could also be down to duff data out of the source, or a failure of the receiver, so ideally both should be checked with known good equipment.

Also worth checking that the adat ports aren't full of dust!

I presume that the adat pipes are relatively short?

Thanks Hugh. I think the longest is half a meter.

I just assumed it was the clock as there is a lock light on the ADC that doesn't seem to come on and the Time Machine lights for sample rate select don't jump on to anything either (they work if you use the buttons to select different s/rates, doesn't work even selecting them)

Does it work if you run the adc on it's internal clock and slave the motu to the adat input?

Odd that the adc won't lock to the nanoclock. That needs further investigation...
