Writing and Publishing Credits
      #989170 - 23/05/12 03:51 PM

Hello Guys and dolls

I am new to the music business, and recrently had to start signing contracts. On the contracts it states Writing and Publishing credits. However I don't totally understand what each credit entails. If someone could define those or lead me in the right direction that would be so great!!

Thanks

Danny Z

Writing credit is for those individuals who have contributed to the song writing. Specifically, the creation of the melody and/or lyrics which comprise the composition copyright.

In some cases, song writers may assign their share of the aforementioned copyright to a publisher for them to exploit and administer. If so, this is the publishing credit.

Thanks Phil O

That seems to clear things up for me! would it ever be beneficial for the artist to get publishing credits?

Thanks

Assuming the artist is also the song writer (or one of them), then they may assign their interest to a publisher. There are several reasons why this could be advantageous.

1. Administration - A publisher would ensure that works are registered with appropriate collection societies and account for royalties generated.
2. Exploitation - A publisher might secure additional income from works e.g synchronization licenses, further cover versions etc.
3. Advances - In some cases, publishers provide an advance on royalties which is then recouped against actual royalties generated.
