Western Digital HD For Music ???
      #989543 - 25/05/12 12:04 PM
Hi

I've just purchased the (Galaxy ll and Vintage D) Sample Library, and all i intend to do is play the sample libraries themselves and to record them in GarageBand as solo piano tracks and later edit in post production. Will not be working with mass orchestral works or multiple sampled instruments to create high end scores.

I'm assuming with this approach without any heavy demands for multiple instrument streaming there really shouldn't be a problem dumping the complete Library on to a WD 7200 rpm External Drive 1TB via USB 2.O. the Drive has no FW or thunderbolt Ports neither does the Mac, and I'm hoping as a result there shouldn't be any issues with latency ?
Would this be fair to say ?

Macbook 5.1 OS X Leopard 10.5. RAM 4GB.

Can't help you with any latency issues but I can say that Western Dig are very reliable!

I am currently running some sample libraries in kontakt on a usb2 drive at 5200rpm (not best practise I know), but it works fine up until 8-12 different tracks, obviously depending on how complicated the parts are.

I was going to ask - I take it you already own this usb2 drive? Just that next time I buy a hard drive, I will definitely be going for a 7200rpm drive with FW800. If you're about to go and BUY a drive, I would suggest the extra money for a faster drive will prob prove better in the long run. But like I say, if you have a usb 2 drive, it won't not work!

Spin speed isn't everything. A drive that uses a higher bit density but that runs at a lower speed could be faster than a drive that runs at a higher speed with a lower bit density.
