Ok, today's topic

Money - £100,000

Car or Studio equipment?

Whatever your choice, what would you buy?

Me, it would be the car anyday - Aston Martin V12 Vantage (That's over, but I'd sell some studio stuff to make up the rest)

Maybe £3.5k on studio nice to haves. The balance on precious metals or stones, squirreled away in a safe deposit box somewhere that was not in the UK, such as Zurich. The foreseeable is going to be all about the rainy day fund. Sorry to be boring but seriously. Most certainly not cars, boats or anything else of the sort! As the wise man said, if it floats, flies or fornicates, rent it... I wouldn't be buying Facebook stock either BTW - WTF was that all about? I see the underwriters have already had to intervene to prop up the initial price on day one - and that was supposed to be the rich person's 'fun' spend of choice for today.

As it is I'll have to settle for a less precious stone...

£100,000? Thank you, sir, that'll fund my retirement very nicely.

Edited to add PS: While you're at it, you couldn't make it £200,000, could you?

Well, first off I'd like to 'waste' the first 10k finally clearing all my remaining debts (mostly mortgage).

After that, if its the 200k option we're getting I'd like to spend it on the studio itself as well as gear. In fact mostly on studio. A couple of years ago there was a modern log cabin up for sale that would have been perfect. Top of a hill with views, near the end of a dirt track (so no reving cars, rumbling lorries etc.) It had mains electricity and water. I can happily do without telephone and internet when I'm really 'in the zone'.

P.S.
I'm already driving a new Mini Cooper S so that all the car I need

Both - Ariel Atom, some bits for the studio and paying off my mortgage. Nicely comes to about 100K

Sadly I don't think £100k will clear my mortgage.

now £200k would be fun. Wouldn't buy cars though. No interest whatsoever ever after several years in the trade. Tin boxes that get you from A to B.

Camper van, nice acoustic, mac book pro and off into the sunset to until the cash runs out

£100k... not enough to buy property, not enough for a great car, but ideal to spend on toys. I would 'invest' in a decent motorbike, renting a workshop, some more tools and materials, and leave plenty left for socialising (or networking as business people call it )

Alternatively, I'd buy a narrow boat, a butty to equip as a workshop for it to tow, and a little less for socialising.

I'd pay off the mortgage, buy myself another middle-aged Mercedes (I have a weakness for them) and a couple of old and overlooked synths like I used to have. I am a man of simple needs.

I would spend as much as I could on women and drink.

The rest I would fritter away...

Well, yes, but it would plug the hole that currently exists. Sadly, however I'm not expecting 200k or even 100k to arrive in my bank account anytime soon, even though I have no doubt that Wiseau is a fine man of his word in matters of this kind.

I was listen to a repeat of R4's Money Box on the way home from practice last night. They were saying that the annuity somebody aged 65 might obtain for £100,000 was only around £6,000 pa. I just ran a quick calc on an on-line site and a 50 year old (I'll be 49 next month) could only obtain £4,700 pa (not index linked). Looks as though I'll have to stick it out at work for a while yet.

Yep, most of us will. I stopped paying into a pension scheme years ago because a financial advisor told me I needed to pay 100% of my income in if I wanted to retire at 60 on half of what I was earning at that time. What's the point? I'll just keep working. If I can.

Unless you happen to be extremely wealthy, neither alternative.

A car is simply a means of getting from A to B reliably, you can achieve that for under 10k.

Investing 100k in studio equipment might be an option in support of a business idea, but not for a hobby.

Yup, another vote for pension plan... or better still GOLD!

I walked into an Aston Martin dealership and the nice salesman let me play some beats quite loudly, so they can have my money anyday.

If it was like "you have to spend all the money or not at all", I'd spend it on a studio. You can get a reliable car for £1k!

Bit of a silly question though isn't it, as people who take the time to sign up and post here must be interested in recording equipment... ask the same question on a Formula 1 forum...

Marlin/Javelin Cabrio for me - definitely the most beautiful car ever made. Just a shame Javelin went under in 2011. But with £100K I could probably buy the jigs and moulds, hire a couple of guys, get one built for myself, and perhaps get it all back on the road again...

Pay off the mortgage, buy a splitter van for the band and spend the rest on time in a good quality studio with a great producer.
