re-soldering my Planet Waves guitar lead but now it won't work
      #989610 - 25/05/12 04:23 PM
My Planet Waves circuit breaker cable (http://www.planetwaves.com/pwCables.Page?ActiveID=4098) has served me well for a few years but recently the circuit breaker connector fell apart. It still worked but I didn't like the way it was held together with electrical tape! I replaced it with a Neutrik TS connector and now it doesn't work at all. I tried replacing the other end with another Neutrik TS connector and the cable still won't work!

Not sure where I could have gone wrong given there's only a central core and a shield?! I did notice the shield is braided *and* wraps around a foil shield but presumably it doesn't matter that I only soldered the braided bit to the Neutrik shield?

I cannot find that product on the Planet waves site.
Is it one of those "fused" cables that is supposed to protect you from electric shock?

If so I would not trust it to do that (and in any case if kit goes "live" only YOU are protected. The rest of the band can just bloody die!?).

I suggest you bin it and buy or make a good solid cable with Neutrik plugs. Safety is a "system" and a state of mind. Get EVERYTHING PAT tested at least once a year. Get a mains tester plug and FCS run all the bands' kit from an RCD!
www.cpc.co.uk sell an RCD that is hard wired into the cable. Fit one of those in the main feed to the diss' board, all your amps and other audio kit should be powered from a single outlet anyway.

Dave.

The are only two reasons why the cable doesn't work.
1. One or both wires are open circuit (ie. Not connected)
2. The is one or more short-circuits between screen and core.

Reasons for open circuit include broken wires, and lacquered wire that has not been cleaned before soldering, so that the solder joint is non-conductive

Reasons for short-circuit include solder or stray wire strands between connector terminals, or a conductive plastic shield not stripped back properly and shorting on the core wire.

Some pics might help us to identify the problem!

The Circuit Breaker cable uses Planet Waves' solderless cable and ends. It is not intended to be soldered to regular jacks. The cable has a lifetime warranty, it should be returned to the shop for a free replacement.
