Which audio interface if any? new
      #989632 - 25/05/12 07:33 PM
Hi all - You're probably all sick to death of this question, but as a noob....

I want to record electric guitar into my PC, using suitable ampsim/DAW.

I'm using Audacity at the moment: can I just plug my axe into the mic socket of my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme PCIe or do I need a proper AI?

I've found a Roland Duo Capture for GB£63 at Amazon which comes with Sonar X1 LE (don't know which version - X1 a, b, c or d)

Is this a good bet? Do I really need it?

How good is LE compared to the full X1?

I'd be grateful for any help.

Thanks.

For recording the guitar into the computer, you need the following:

guitar -> intrument-to-line or instrument-to-microphone level converter (usually called a D.I. box) -> A/D converter -> computer interface

You can buy separate devices, but fortunately many audio interfaces have an instrument input that is suitable for guitar, bass, electric piano, etc. If you already have a good audio interface with at least one microphone input but no instrument input, then you can get a D.I. for plugging your guitar.
The Roland you mentioned has an instrument input but I have no idea about its low latency performance, and it depends a lot on each particular computer anyway. You will need good low latency performance if you are running FXs (like amplifier simulation) in realtime.
