For recording the guitar
into the computer, you need the following:
guitar -> intrument-to-line or
instrument-to-microphone level converter (usually called a D.I. box) -> A/D converter
-> computer interface
You can buy separate devices, but fortunately many
audio interfaces have an instrument input that is suitable for guitar, bass, electric
piano, etc. If you already have a good audio interface with at least one microphone input
but no instrument input, then you can get a D.I. for plugging your guitar.
The
Roland you mentioned has an instrument input but I have no idea about its low latency
performance, and it depends a lot on each particular computer anyway. You will need good
low latency performance if you are running FXs (like amplifier simulation) in realtime.
