I'll show you mine if you show me yours .
Actually, I've seen yours and have to say, for the benefit of other readers, it's a
brilliant and fascinating resource, so go see http://www.bemuso.comMy own modest effort is at http://www.mattdowning.co.uk .
It's not very exciting, and I still haven't worked out what to do about the pointless
'welcome' page - just ditch it probably and go straight to one of the other pages. But it
serves it's purpose as the music is easily accesible so I can refer people to it if they
want to hear examples of my work. My other favourite forumee sites are by Blue
Mask, Carlos Presents and James Lehman (very professional without being pseudocorporate or
irritating). Matt

Yeh, I wondered about what to put first on my site, i decided to go for just news
on the opening page, rather than a 'Hi welcome to my site...' type page. I don't like thos
'click here to enter site' pages, so pointless, like shrink wrapping for web sites!
My own site's still under construction BTW, but when it's ready you'll all know
about it!

Mine's www.rachelapp.co.uk. I'm not too happy with it right now, i need to make it more user-friendly for
people with poor sight (i have to admit i didn't really think about it when i designed
it) Oh, and i need more content LOL It's just HTML raw coding - i'm
a bit old fashioned when it comes to websites, probably because i did my first one in the
"early days" (1995)... I mean, i'm old fashioned as a web designer, not a surfer! I like
well-designed fancy websites but when i think about making a new website for whatever
project i have or for friends, i always think of it in terms of coding (be it HTML, perl,
php etc), it's quite bizarre... Maybe it's laziness LOL

I had to look... trackitdown seem to have come from nowhere since August... what's the
story? Do they advertise or is it word-of-mouth? I have to admit this is the first mention
of them I've seen.

One of the main guys behind trackitdown.net is Ed Real who was the A&R for Nukleuz
Records, which itself was pretty much the biggest hard dance label in the UK for about 6
years (think it's just folded though...) So it's got credentials, and they seem to
have a lot of the big labels of dance on there. I think their proposal is much
more directed at DJs than the 'consumer', and is a pretty compelling one - download a
track, stick it on CD and play it out that evening, all for about a quarter of the price
of a slice of vinyl. I'll be sad to see vinyl go, but that's what it's looking
like, at least for the smaller dance labels.

Vic, I happened to click on your link for some unknown reason and my immediate thought was
"why are none of the images clickable links?". Tip: Don't waste any
opportunity on your site to make something clickable, as there is nothing worse for
visitors, and the moment you scroll down the page on your site, you lose sight of the
three yellow button links at the top right (well, on my screen you do). Just my
initial impressions. Ian G

Lol, Logic ST24 came with the soundcard (STA C-Port)-- I was puzzled as to what it
was as well, and it didn't come up with anything on Google, but it seems to look the same
as logic... I'd love to hear from anyone else that uses it - so far I can't find anyone
else on this forum has it...

Mac OSX free HTML - http://www.tacosw.com/TextEdit also does some basic
stuff. Word does convert docs to HTML but it makes very big and rough pages.
Editing its HTML is a nightmare. Avoid. I use BBEdit. Highly recommended but
costs...

I hate virginity. Well, unless its a brunette, slim, 18 years old, on a beach..........
Sorry, seeme to have drifted off for a bit there. Anyway; Deluxe Records We've only just started operating but we're not holding back. I'm not going to say
anything like "the best dance record label" because to be quite honest, we're not.
Ministry probably are. But, anyway that's a different topic. We're just doing our

Hi, I like your site Mistrust, good simple uncluttered design, though i would have
preferred a bit more content. Was that really Midge Ure in your photo gallery or am i
being thick and missing the point? if the real man you should be making more of it - don't
be modest!

The Jiggers Ceilidh Band
New Website about to be launched:
Big day Music:
professional Musicians for the perfect Scottish Wedding
And also another
site about to be launched for my studio/music, but all I have is a picture at the
moment...
jpg
draft of www, beatcave,co,uk website new look
I also did this one:
The New Scottish Choir and
Orchestra
but it's being taken over by a proper web-team soon, as I've
not had the time to maintain/finish it...
Any opinions on my sites
(especially bigdaymusic one) are always welcomed. I'm not a pro designer, just do it as a
hobby.

I looked at the bigday music one. It was tidy and neat, but i thought the design a
bit dull considering the exciting subject you have on offer (music/musicians).
For example, instead of a monochrome musical score as the pic on the left, how about
colour pics of musicians at work in evening dress, kilts or whatever. the pic could change
from page to page thus adding some colour and interest.
Neeldess to say there
wasn't much content & none of the band links works, but i assume that's a work in
progress?
Basic design OK, but make it more interesting, you are trying to sell
something after all.
BTW I'm certainly no expert either, just a bloke who
dabbles, so take my advice accordingly.

Thanks Glyn. All comments are useful. Finding the right image is a difficult business! The
links will be up and running soon too, and I see what you mean about the excitement
factor: it would benefit from being a little more exciting! g

'flash' and a good fast connection for this one, or a lot of patience!
Not
finished yet of course, and it works best in Internet explorer. Not sure about other
browsers.
Comments welcome. Good or bad.
Paul.

Mr.Smith, i think you did a really good job with that site. Neat and tidy. I couldn't seem
to get the biogs up, don't know if they're not finished yet? But most of the other stuff
appeared for me. Like to see 'news' on the front page, that's good.
Don't like
the pointless opening flash thing (not just your site but in general), but then i never
do, i mean whats the point, apart to show cleverness, if i want a movie I'll watch a DVD
right?
I would have said the site was excellent, that is if I hadn't visited
the one in Rob's other thread, which is just outstandingly brilliant in my opinion - check
it out.

Yeah, I saw that after posting this. (Head held low in shame) Very, VERY good
site. Thanks for the comments. Biogs are unfinished as yet, I'm not
sure which angle to approach them from. The pointless bit at the start is
supposed to have some music playing and is kinda like a front cover. Presentation
purposes, but yeah I suppose fundamently it serves no purpose. anyway, thanks
again Paul.

I know what you mean, it's a difficult trick
to get the biog right without sounding too pretentious, but also to make it interesting,
especialy when you're talking about yourself!

I really don't like the blue text on a blue background for the links etc, that's a no-no
in my view. Makes it difficult to read, especialy for old timers like me. I would
switch it to white on blue or something, make it as easy as possible for the visitor to
see the info.

yeah.. good point actually.. my index page is the only page where I have the blue on blue
background.. I put those links up as short cuts to deeper places in my site.. the idea
being that they should be for people who have been to my site before and don't want to
have to go through a lot pages to get some place.. The idea was that the 'sound artist'
and 'web design' links where really the main front doors... anyway.. I'm not
really happy with the index page.. I was thinking I might do something like make so that
when the index page opens it would automatically go to a specific dimension so that links
on the sides could have the proper kind of visual relationship to the center image.. and
the buttons below the main image would be immediately visible.. but I just haven't gotten
around to it yet... on top of that I've been thinking about throwing out the index page
as it stands and finishing a Flash splash page that I have in the pipe line.. but even in
that scenario the current page would be the non-flash index page But yeah.. I
should definitely change the link colors. The blue back ground color is a
kind of branding idea... To be associated with the sky or water.. and I have a few flash
sections to the site in the pipe line that ought to reinforce this idea a bit more.. It should be mentioned that there are sections in the site where the reading is
even harder to read then on the Index page!!!

CARLOsPRESENTS
I love the C64
and music. I also love Rob C. So iwanted to make some music but have it on a site that
looks good.
My only problem is that the songs have to be downloaded before
you can hear them.
I need to work out how to do streaming.

Carlos, Looking good. Sorry if the FTP has been a bit unrelible lately. I've been
re-jigging things here.
Flash is one way of streaming, or you cud use the M3U
trick. Where you just have the person download the playlist, and then there player streams
the track from the server...

Basic design OK, but make it more interesting, you are trying to sell something

now?
It's really good! All the links I checked worked. the site design is more
colourful and bright. Gives feeling of confidence - these poeople are trustworty, they
won't screw up my wedding!
Would like to see some photos added of musicians in
action at events you have organised. But if you are just starting out that will be
difficult I suppose? Certainly when you've got a few under your belt add a photos section
of succesful events you've done, pics of brides and pipers in full regalia, a caelie band
in action, that type of thing.
Good luck.

Giant With Laser...
The design of the main site looks drab to my eyes. Music
is EXCITING, but your site design doesn't convey that, it's very business-like, l8ike a
site would be that sold office stationary for example! It looks like the Microsoft MSN
site, maybe because of the colour scheme and the blue banner along the top?
Having said that, it is tidy and professional looking, if that's what you're after.
The new site doesn't have enough content to pass comment on, but again you seem
to be opting for an unispiring design choice.
Sorry if that disapoints, I
know how much work will have gone into this, so it hurts when its criticised, but i think
you need to liven it up.

hi famolly. my first impression was that it had a nice graphic: draw that yourself? second
impression was that the site wasn't taking itself too seriously (which is fine) 3rd
was a real annoyance: the lack of a BACK button (except via rightclick). That is a real
pet hate of many browsers: back is the most-used function in a browser: don't make it
difficult to get at! g

Laurence, I didn't realise that your site was a corporate site, my comments on it were
about it being a 'music' site (I thought that 'projects' related to whatever music you're
working on and 'studio' would be pictures of your studio). Bearing that in mind, might be
as well to ignore my pearls of wisdom.
I guess the main thing for you to think
about it is who you're selling to. I personally like the cuckoo thing, but if I were
looking for someone to make me a business website that would probably put me off.
Sorry to have confused things further!

Yes, me too, I assumed it was a music site. If you're a design
consultancy or whatever then I guess the layout is OK, but surely if you're into design
you should be coming up with something novel or unusual?
I rather like the
'bird' examples of pages for a design company, it shows an example of... er.. design!

The design question really comes down to how people use your site and what your message
is. Unless you need to impress people in some way or hit them with a strong message it's
difficult to spice up the design without getting contrived or distracting. On a music site
you do need a focussed image and holistic feel, but for a general utility or information
site sometimes bland is the right thing... as long as you spell out what's going on.
Broadly speaking, don't spend time on design that doesn't serve any purpose...
but you need to make that call yourself. Second opinions are always useful.
One thing I'd take from the feedback on Laurence's main site is that the purpose and
message could be stronger on page one. Will people think: what is MSWeb? What do they do?

One thing I've realised about my web-browsing is that I don't like, or usually don't read
the nav buttons, especially if there are too many or it's not obvious what they take me to
straight away. Buttons that say "about" are a bit cryptic, for example.
My tip to designers would be to make your nav buttons totally transparent to the eye. Try
using 2-3 words if it clarifies exactly what it is the target page is. Deciphering buttons
is NOT something people can be bothered doing a lot of the time. Also, remember
that your first page is your first impression: the customer is not interested in you, he's
interested in HIMSELF. Reel him in by simply offering the benefits HE could be
experiencing were he to use your service/product, then he'll give you more of his time. g

I don't share your button thing entirely Greg but I know what you mean. I normally click
them to see (if I'm interested in the site) but don't really read them and think.
I'm happy with "About" though, it's one of the things I look for on a new site,
and there's a kind of convention that About, FAQ, What's new, Site map, Contact,
etc. on the home page usually mean the same on every site. Certainly, "about" isn't
very descriptive, but we know it means here's some info about the purpose of this site
and who we are.

I think it maybe depends
how experienced the visitor is? I mean there are some kind of 'standard' buttons
that I expect to be there and I know what I expect to see when i click them.
Contact - I expect to see contact information, address, email, etc.
About - I
expect an explanantion of what the company or the site is 'about'
Gallery -
usualy photos of the artist or product
Links - links to other associated
sites
Blog - biographical log
News - obvious
Home button
- to return to the home page
I think if people keep to these type of
conventions then there shouldn't be too much problem in knowing what they're for and
finding your way around?

yep, agree Glyn. That is pretty conventional. I think that the "about" button is the only
one that has unclear connotations, convention or not! "Background" perhaps???, or
"history"? I think that any band that takes itself seriously would consider having a
"press" page (unless they were already well known). It is pretty difficult to assert
originality but maintain a conventionally practical approach. Anyone seen sites that do
this? I'll start a new thread: "band websites that you like" I have to say that
I quite like the "ween" website (although I can only remember that it kept me interested
enough to actually read it!) g

to follow from first impressions. Audio link didn't work for me (maybe it's not running
yet?) I don't like the keyboard picture in the main image. The setup looks untidy and
"home-studio" esque. Obviously, you don't want to mislead people, but I'd be wary of
pictures of CRT monitors, which are Soooo last year in terms of studio image.
Oh, hang on. The music just started after about 2 minutes of waiting... hmm. maybe a bit
long. I'd recommend having an instant loop that plays a couple of times that
originated from your studio, with a clear option to turn it off.
Also, I don't
know about the "list of songs_and their styles" idea. I've been toying with this as well,
but I honestly don't know if people will be interested...I don't think that people like to
think of being "pigeonholed listeners". It does depend on what your target market is I
suppose. If they are clients looking for factory styles for corporate videos etc then it
might be ok. If you're trying to "sell" your work as commercially viable stuff, I'd go
with the "integral media player" option. By all means have a downloads page for samples
(for people who really want a decent hifi version of your work), but I'd put a radio
player on there with lo-fi samples playing automatically until they're switched off.
Those are just my thoughts. I'm being a bit more picky because I feel that your
site design skills and musical skills obviously are of a standard to make these smaller
things of importance.

Dammit. just spent 20 min. writing a reply and then IE crashes.
Thanks a lot for being thorough.

Well it is a
home studio, and all my hardware is probably worth less than £2000 (2nd hand anyway), so
I don't really know how else to represent it.

Hmm...
strange, it should stream almost instantly. I'd like to know if other people are
experiencing the same problem.
Don't like the loop thing. The page will take longer
to load and a short loop gets annoying quite fast.

I like pigeonholes. Often in eg. "sound files" on
SOS, I can't be arsed to listen to the music cause I don't know if it's a genre I like. I
wouldn't eg. listen to country or indie. It's just a waste of time imo listening to songs
just to find out that musically they are as far away from anything you listen as it could
be.
Lo-fi option would be nice though. Will look into that.
What
is my market? Good question. Within the last year I've been trying to start up a
nu-metal/breakbeat band, been producing euro trance with a singer, been looking to go into
library music, and trying to start up a RnB project.

Thanks in regards to musical
skills.
Web design skills however, are not as good as they might seem. Basically,
I've bought a template, edited it, new text, images, added links etc. nothing major.
To be honest I'm not sure if I can add a dedicated player etc.

I don't like sites that
decide how you want your screen... Why not let the user decide? If they
want 800x600 it should work for them. And if they want full screen it should work too. I don't browse full screen... isn't running a single app rather '60s?

I wasn't actually targeting your
site. But it might apply.
I think it should display equally well on any
screen too... hence the % preference. Look at the page you're reading this on. {As well as
most of the majors out here... ms, yahoo, google, etc.}
Personally,
I think those itty bitty pages are irritating.

Again... that's why I think stuff
should scale.
I run Gnome with 4 desktops... I usually open apps full screen on
each desktop... Mailer, NVU, Editor and Browser {for 'net sessions.. the setup's different
depending on what I'm doing. } Even in Windows I generally maximize things that I want to
pay attention to and use the taskbar to switch between them. {all sessions}

I thought the layout was really
good. neat and tidy. Didn't like the repetition of so and so will get you so and so bit on
the home page, most of the links had obvious meanings in my opinion, you could instead
have a 'hover over' explanantion of each link button if you want to explain what each one
does?
Also the photos look a bit amateurish. it would be well worht getting
someone who knows what they're doing with a camera and get some decent lookinbg ones done.
Just some 'constructive' criticism. Good job overall.

I wasn't
sure if it was obvious that the plectrums on the left were suppose to be links. I need to
think of a way to make them more obvious then I can remove the explanation from the front
page.

I'd just kill the
explanations... I think the picks are fine. Maybe they could stand to be bigger. Folk
looking for a place to click are not going to have a problem figuring them out as they
are. Maybe the text in the logo is a bit small... the curves on the right hand side are a
bit rough as well. You might try drawing them in a vector program and exporting them.
Sodipodi's been ported to Windows if you don't have something like Illustrator.

You might just shoot a lot of
closeups at a practice some night. Closer is better if the background's a living room.
Shoot enough and you should easily come up with usable stuff. You might play with the room
lights a bit...
I think I'd do the same thing to the studio shots that you've
done to the guitar shots... Or maybe do some sort of set in the basement or the alley or
something. Shots of a table in the living room or bedroom look like just that. They don't
give you a professional look or set any type of personality for the band. Telling the
truth is probably good... you don't have to tell folk everything though.
If
you do shoot stuff in the living room... close the window unless it's to the side of what
you're shooting. Shooting with it at your back is probably better.
I like the
guitar closeups...

Quite a nice tidy site.
I don't like the use of the bog-standard 'Times new
Roman' font, I suggest using Arial., Times NR looks amateurish and your site is better
than that. This is really easy to fix.
On the pictures page the small thumb
nails wouldn't expand to bigger pictures, is that still work in progress, or is it
designed that way just to have little photos?
Overall not too bad.

GlynB, thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. I wonder how come you see the times
font (maybe the stylesheet isn't linked properly..)it should use Geneva -> arial
->Helvetia -> sans serif family... I'm a bit puzzled as why this happens, it's not the
first time I use a css file .. I've tested the site on all major browsers and platforms.
I'm going to look a bit deeper into why this is happening to you (and not to me, so
far). Which browser are you using and which platform you're on? do you have the
Geneva font installed ? Are links displayed in blue? or in black? the small
pictures will stay small no need to
see them all blown up IMHO.. I like to keep this site simple and easy updatable..

Inocybe:
The font displays correctly in Firefox here but not in IE6. The reason
is that IE doesn't cascade the font-family style rule down to the td contents when applied
to a table cell. If you move the font-family declaration to the body element then all
should be well.
i.e.
body{
font-family: : Geneva, Arial,
Helvetica, sans-serif;
}
IE doesn't handle cascading styles
very well in general and in the case of tables its even worse. In my experience its best
to avoid applying styles to table elements when you want to style the contents of cells
and rather style the contents directly. Im not a big fan of table layouts generally but
that's another story.
That not withstanding its a very nice site you've got
there. Good stuff.

Yes i have geneva font
installed, I checked for it in MSWord and it's there as an option, as are arial etc.
Links are displayed in Black. Using Internet Explorer version 6. Standard
stuff.
Looks like the stylesheet isn't sorking properly?

Kudos for going for a standards compliant design. Just a few comments...
You
need to set the z-index of the ul element to ensure that your dropdowns appear over the
top of other elements like the imageside div. z-index:3; will be fine.
In the
imageside div tag you need to put quotes around the id value (i.e. <div
id="imageside"> </div>) cos without them IE6 isn't displaying the
background-image.
Dunno if you care but the menus don't work well at 800x600
since the floated <li> elements that should be on the far right get shoved down on
to a new line as the menu bar is too wide. Maybe 9em width would work better.
There's no link back to the home page from any of the other pages. I don't know if this
is generally the case but our clients ALWAYS moan if we forget to provide a link back to
the home page (unless its just a splash screen or similar).
I think you need to
have more colour on the menu, logo and page header bar, perhaps just use borders to add a
hint of extra colour. For example the menu bar <li> elements could have left and
right borders which would also make them appear more evenly spaced (if you know what I
mean). The fact that the dropdown menus are the same colour as the title bar that they
overlap makes them look a bit odd, too. If they're going to be the same colour then I
think the dropdowns need a border of some kind.
One last comment on the layout:
I think the imagebar would look better if its right edge was aligned with the right edge
of the menu bar and footer. There's a couple of ways that you could arrange that but my
approach would be to shove the content div away from the left edge of the browser window
so that its left edge is inline with the right side of the "S" in the ETS logo and expand
its width so that it pushed the imagebar into line.
I usually use the STRICT
DTD to force IE6 into standards mode when doing CSS layouts as it can help to get things
looking consistent and keep box-model hacks to a minimum.
I hope you glean
something useful from that. As ever YMMV...

It does seem like that text block should wrap.

Tried it, and it still doesn't work. I think its the way IE is
reading the layers, however I'm not sure. Need to reasearch this issue.

I agree mainly, but the
company wanted a slick grey look.
I experimented with borders, but they didn't
achieve the desired effect.

Yeah, after having a proper look at the markup and css I realise
that the problem is the way that IE handles floats differently to other browsers. Rather
than using relative positioning for the imagebar you should give it a large enough
left-margin to push it past the main-body element (652px or thereabouts).

Ah cunning! and then I take it you would need to set the position to "static"
The only other thing I'm having difficulties with, is the drop down menus dont postion
correctly in IE.
Thanks for all your help! You are a star!

Glad to help, Laurence.
You don't need to set the position to static explicitly
since that's the default for any element which doesn't have a positioning specified, but
in the strict sense you're right- the positioning scheme for the imagebar should be
"static" since you want it to stay within the normal flow.
A quick fix for your
menus- change the li ul selector thus:
li ul { display: none;
position: absolute; width: 9em; top: 2em; }
And add
z-index:3; to both the li and ul selector blocks.
Voila! Dropdown menus that
work in IE!

For some reason due to the way IE read DIV layers, its positining it reative to the last
layer. So it works with a small margin, however the same can't be said for firefox which
doesnt... www.msweb.co.uk/etsAny ideas?

Jesus!
but you have to admit that this thread is a bit far gone from the very
cool way that it was started... Ha! "show us your sites". I still feel my balls hit my

Anyway whatever. I just always checked up on
this thread to see what the forum dudes made on the web for their music. And it was
always full of cool stuff. But even Ian (the king of rightiousness) started telling
people what was wrong with their sites. I was bummed. And at this point its like full of
comments and empty of sites. So I'm bummed about that. And I hope that people start
posting their problems in regards to internet publishing in a thread that is not called
"show us your sites". That's all.
Anyway.... Mr. giant dude, dont be bummed.

site B) the quality of the musical samples (be brutal) g

Hey Spy. The text is quite spaced out, and could probably fit in a much smaller space, so
that it scans better. The dice are nice-looking but the graphics are inconsistent
stylistically throughout the site. It's pretty difficult to do that well, so I'd recommend
either copying someone else's site closely or getting a graphically aware friend to give
you a colour and styling scheme. You should probably aim to use the images to
visually say what the text is already saying: people might think it's a gambling site,
otherwise... The tone of the text is good and friendly though: if I was
browsing, looking for someone to collaborate with I wouldn't feel intimidated into not
phoning you. g

Spy,
Write out 100 times: I am not an "aspiring producer". That's between you
and your learning curve. You are a PRODUCER. How many producers are there in the UK? Did
they pass some kind of test?
"Born and raised..." Don't start with that.
Start with what you think people will want to see in your first sentence. Do they want to
know where you were born? Or that you are brewing some audio shock and awe with your
collective? You are passionate about what you do... I know that, don't tell them where you
were born (unless there's some genealogy vibe happening here that I don't know about).
Visuals obviously need pepping up. Where it's at now, you could get that onto one
page and make it more immediate while you work on Mark 2.
Are the dice edgy
enough for your site name? They made me smile, but perhaps the other theme will ring more
bells with your target demographic?
That's just one view... a lot of people
(and I think I've heard from each and every one) find my style too direct. So it's not the
law.
But I want to see a smoking version two. Happy to do you some words if
it helps. Good start (way better than my Mark One).

definitely something I need to work on

Cheers Rob, as far as the dice are concerned, I thought that the 'other' connotation was
a little too obvious so I thought I'd try something different, but I see what you're
saying

wwooooo! out there, but a nice site nonetheless. A real touch of the being slightly odd
being about it. I think it's affecting me... I couldn't dig the music, but
then I'm quite a mainstream kind of guy, and this stuff is so far from the mainstream the

Didn't listen, at work, but the site looks
good. Nice balance of cleverness of design, without losing the obvious, ie links to
information which is what a site exists for. Good job.

Perhaps I misunderstood the thread's purpose, but I understood it to be a place where you
showcased music communities/artist websites that you're working on:
"I know a
lot of forum regulars have got music sites... here's your opportunity to whack them up and
tell us what you're doing... don't be shy..."
I just wanted to embed a little
Flash in my post seeing that the feature was there - being Active X, this may have
prompted your browser agent to throw an alert up (Gregster). I'm no stranger to spam, and
being a webworker I have to face that crap every day. Thumbs up for your vigilance
though.
Anyway, visit addasong.com if you get a chance and sign up if you're in
need of yet another platform for your original music - I've worked my proverbial a** off
on this site and I'm trying to get more artists on there. I guess its virtual base is in
Medway, Kent - where I am - but we have artists from all over the place. It's been
lovingly hand-coded by yours truly and has NO commercial links or ads whatsoever.
I'm also in the habit of upping people's space, features and bandwidth if they simply
log-in from time to time and upload their music - a gift for simply participating. The
site does have inbuilt IRSC coding and Paypal option for those that wish to sell their
musical wares. When DRM and the UK Internet music infrastructure has settled I'll think
about doing a proper launch with serious features such as integration with the official
download charts, licensing protocols and other emergent music-based web technologies.
And when I get some more capital of course.
Cheers.

Yep, that's what it's about. Greg's just being cautious... we do get the usual spam here,
but's there's a world of difference between your stuff and say CokeMusic.
I
like the site. You've done a good job with what is a rather over-done genre. The world
probably doesn't need another CokeMusic but more artist-driven download sites can't be a
bad thing.
I'd suggest the trick is getting a coherent vibe going with your
artists and visitors... people don't want the 'record shop' experience, they want the club
or small label experience. But good luck with the whole thing...
ISRCs and all
that tend to come up in the music biz forum. You might get some interest for that facility
there.

Hey how are things going Owen...
I remeber listening to some of your tracks
last year, really liked them. Site looks ok, but the adverts kinda make it a bit
disjointed...
Good luck with it all....

The Tripod pages are a bit weird all round. The site looks OK on a PC (I had probs last
time with Safari, I'll have a look tonight) but you can't use the back button. That's
Tripod rather than your site though. Biog's a bit thin... and perhaps too
personal?

Owen - I'd also gladly host your music.
It's outstanding. Nice groove on
'London...'.
Your website, however, doesn't really do you any justice, but
that's ok as you should be concentrating on your music and not web-design. I'll design you
a little site if you want. At the very least, get some stuff up on Addasong.com - it's
free and gives you loads of tools to present yourself and your work. No ads or pop-ups.
Give us a shout. The more the merrier.

I like the openwater site, I think you could improve it loads just by changing the font?
It looks a bit out of place the font?
Nice music tho.

its very springy but im on a very fast line. Thisnk its right on the money as far as
design. Google have you with a name search, but .. scottish wedding music band doesnt find
you easily. I use scrub the web at www.scrubtheweb.com . thy hav a meta tag checker which will give you
som clues about search engine friendlyness and check your site. There are others. Like the
rings!

I like it, better than the one I roiginaly saw i think a while back. Like the
colour scheeme warm and inviting. it looks professional and loads well. Like the quote on
the home page, i would add more like these as soon as you have them, it's OK to have a
guest book with quotes from guests at the events you do but not everyone will look at it
so it's good to put the quotes where they're more 'in yer face'.
Yes, I agree
it needs the images somewhere to make the pages a bit livelier, like a nice one of a
beautiful bride, some musicians in action, a wedding cake, that type of thing and
different image in each page - make them full colour in my opinion. The site should say
'happy' - weddings are happy.
Incidently...
Liked clip 1 from the
Jiggers, they were on the CtrlAltDeplete CD recently along with yours truly were they not?
Excellent stuff.

Hi Glyn. I never got a copy of that CD, completely forgot about it! I'll need to see if I
can track one down.
Thanks for your comments. I agree about all your suggestions.
For the customer comments, I will have around 10 or so rotating comments. A lot of the
comments I get will be going onto a comments page for the Jiggers on their own site, but
around 10 should get the message across on this site in the meantime.
Also
thanks openwater for your comments. SEO is the next area I'll be focussing on once the
site is live. I'll be supporting it with a marketing drive to improve listings and
business, so I figured best to do it all in a one'r.

Sorry, I may have jumped the gun a bit by posting info about my site already. Don't you
just hate ppl who barge in here waving a flag for their "pet project" and contribute
little else?
Well, I only registered today so there's still time to rectify
that
I've been checking out some of the sites on this thread already
and there's some really cool stuff here!
Anyway, here's my twopence worth
(again)
___________________________________________________________
I
have a new website called Dubsounds which I hope some of you might be in to.
Our theme is analogue synth and drum machine sounds and music from 1970 to 1983. The fun
part is that we host music, give out retro synth samples, VSTi FXP's and have a forum
where you can get tech help or ask whatever burning question you might have.
We don't turn away the VSTi community either, (no snobbery thanks). To us, an Arturia or
GMedia remodeled classic is still as valid, (with less reliability issues).
If you're into electroclash or never stopped playing Metamatic and Travelogue, you might
like our little place.
We're still new, expanding rapidly and still have bags
of enthusiasm! If you feel like joining our forum or signing up for the freebies it would
be bloomin' marvelous to see you. We'll even get the kettle on
Cheers,
Shaun

Like the design, most professional looking. good job.
Coupla observations... The logo in the centre of the home page - when I clicked it didn't do anything? Is that
work in progress or just a glitch?
The bio. I wouldn't bother telling
everyone about band members who didn't work out (so and so replaced x who left on bass
then y came in , blah...) most people aren't really interested in that kind of detailed
history stuff (unless you're a huge band with obsessive fans). Just tell us something
really positive and interesting about your current band members. Accentuate the
positive!
Hey, just my opinions, I'm no expert - hope it's constructive.

alright look. I am just trying to give the iceman props here. THATS ALL! Its an
awesome effect. I have seen it before in sofake. Sofake is IMO making the best stuff on
the web today. It is AWESOME that iceman has enough skill and taste to have done
something simillar.

Just
plain good design. (the sites I mean)
I hope you are done with iceage because
it rocks just as it is! real chilled-out. its design is its content. Well that and
tunes. Awesome.
Oh and I guess I meant sofake makes the best FLASH stuff. I
really love a well made simple and sweet html site.
props.

Yeah - it took 40 seconds before the splash loaded for me (and I have broadband!) - and
during that time the page was just blank - I'm guessing most people would just think the
site was dead. Likewise when you click the main menu options you don't get much feedback
that anything is happening, it just looks broken.
Also your music page used
some quicktime plugin that firefox didn't understand (and I have quicktime installed which
is more than a lot of windows people do). It did work in IE6, but only the bottom half of
the players showed and they were all bunched up at the top rather than lined up with the
song names.
Sorry if that wasn't gentle, but I thought you'd like to know

I really love the colour combinations. The BOLD is very effective. Friendly and
down-to-earth without being simplistic. Good call. I always love the use of watermarking
and you've done a splendid job of it with the synths etc. A joy to look at. All
the best with the finishings.

minimism : I like that box. It should be sitting on a plain black background, with no
lines or stars to disrupt the starkness of the image IMO. Nice tho g

Just had a squizz at your site and it has the top cut off, and i cant seem to
adjust the browser (IE) to view it properly.
The drawing has the top of the
characters head cut off and you can see some text, but as i say it's too high up, forgive
my luddite/crude description but i thought i would mention it to you.
Did you
draw the pic? Pencil? It's cool.

I've just relaunced the site, with new images (courtesy of smelly_kid). Proper
links (and explanations) to all the songs I've done this year, (plus all the old
favourites with some additional notes) A newBlog page. A Comments
form on everypage and a possible reason to (or if you don't like my music a reason no to)
join the mailing list. So you can mail me direct and not have to vent your anger or love
on any public forums. Blank tab sheets (bass and guitar), plus a tips section
for all you home recordists and budding songwriters. So, if you enjoy an
eclectic mix of ambient jazz pop rock indie punk soundtracks, pop along to the Hair
Thieves website. http://www.hairthieves.comRollasoc

it myself, so not the best site around lol, but I have used a flash plugin player for the
music, and obviously left a link to credit the maker of that flash player. Its just a
basic design, but neat and tidy!

Hi First time on the new forum. My own music can be found here: johnmoxey.com I also founded Songstuff a few
years ago. I wrote almost all the backend php and the database design. Some site sections
are 3rd party source, but not many. I have written several of the articles on
songwriting, guitar and music technology. Cheers John

Hi 6am. I like the look, it's clean cut and easy to navigate. The
text I feel lets it down a little, as there is no real personality (other than a kind of
passive docile one) and it doesn't seem you are very confident. Are you aiming to get more
work from people when they browse to the site? I've written a few suggestions below, but
only as constructive criticisms: I think the site really has a lot of potential, so I'm
not slagging it off for the sake of it! "I'm a London based music composer,
songwriter and producer. This site gives you a brief insight into what I do and also
a chance to get a feel for who I am." Using "I" all the time is fine
unless you are selling something, and then the focus has to be on "you" the reader. I'd
take out the "brief insight" sentence, as that is obvious anyway. It's quite
good and concise, but I'd make it even more so. Have a slogan or catchphrase which will
inspire people with confidence in your music, drive and direction. Talk about the aims of
your work. Draw people in by telling them something interesting about yourself, that
subtly reflects an individual aspect of your music philosophy. What about "my earliest
musical memories were of... what about you?" "I’m currently developing
material towards an album, I also write and produce music for various artists as well as
for tv, film and multimedia." Second part is good (anything
prestigious-sounding? Put it on!) first part is bad. "developing material towards". What
about "my new album is currently taking over all the studio: due for release soon" or
something. Seem excited about it, and people will get interested. "I would like
to think that over the years I have developed a distinctive sound, merging mood and
melody" You would like to think? Either you have or you haven't. Don't waste
time and space with modesty. Give people the facts as you see them, and then they can
decide whether they disagree. That just comes across as wishy washy. I am expecting dull
music on reading that, (I've not listened though, that's just what I'm expecting!) "with atmosphere and groove. I write emotionally and hope that it comes across
in my music. For me it would be impossible to separate the two." Separate the
two what? Emotion and music? Atmosphere and groove? Again, this is unclear and a bit wishy
washy. Make a more interesting and possibly mysterious (but not too pretentious) comment
about your music: draw people in. You can still be humble and be confident of your
abilities. "On the music page you can listen to some of my recent material. If
you are interested in any of the music or need any further information please contact
me" Not much information there that isn't already obvious. What about "to
discuss commissions, publishing or any aspect of my work please contact 6am" "Thanks for checking out my site. " What? You're doing ME a favour by
letting me hear your wonderful music, remember, and seeing a bit of your wonderful world.
You sound a little too humble to earn the respect of a browser. If you really mean it, say
something like: "nice to have you around" or "drop by anytime: the music is always
changing" (or something less cheesy!). good one g

Good site. Very slick. Everything I tried worked. Looks pro to me. No criticisms
spring to mind. Didn't try any music as I have no sound facility on the PC I'm on.

yep, nice site. 2 things struck me 1. "news" should link to a bit
within the site, to give a nice professional "we can afford a web guy to update our site"
feel. Minor niggle, though. 2. THe purple pics on the band page: naff. They
don't have any magic or mystery about them. Plus the curly dude has a hat on in the bottom
one, which implies: "we're posing for a photo shoot, but don't know what to do" as opposed
to "we were captured on film in this location" or "we're arty, and we really know how to
pose for a photo shoot". You don't want middle ground, and a purple filter does not mask
the fact that it's a bit of a dud picture. Other than that, I get the feeling
that the music will be quite poppy, inoffensive, a bit bland maybe and no other clues.
Purely based on the visual presentation of the website. Don't get me wrong, it is nice,
simple enough and slick, but not all that exciting. I would try to use the graphics
and images to clarify the artistic direction/statement of the band, so that people know
what to expect even before the mp3s have started to play. Just being hard to
please here, for the sake of constructive criticism (and also to learn, as I need to apply
some of my own advice in my own sites, too!) g

any of them, for that matter) and let me know what impression you get. All samples
now mp3s as previously suggested, not wma. Also, if you can find the easter
eggs you're welcome to them g

Hi PlinPlickemn
First thing
I'd do is take all the pictures off and watermark them - they'll be on eBay before you
know it.
I personally love that kind of art and think they are stunning by the
way.

Hello Dave.
When did your rates go from £30 to £50 per hour?
Shame, as i was looking for a London based mastererererer soon. And believe it or not
you were on my shortlist, hence i was drawn to a reply.
No worries,
business is business... And i don't doubt that you know your job. Though lower rates
and quality service together would attract higher numbers, at least that's how it should
be, in theory, but the worlds not ideal.
Just my take on business.
Don't listen to me though, i'm a crazy fool.
As long as people are willing to
shell out.... Innit?
Do you have PMC's? Someone said you had PMC's.
Who? Someone, somewhere round when i was researching mastering services in London.
Good luck with your business. It's still cheaper than most in London.

Dave,
That's generally a nice site. Just a few comments:
1) The site
seems to take an awful long time to load, especially the rollover images for the menu.
We're on 2Meg here so I don't know where the problem is...
2) Dunno if it's
intentional, but the rollover image for the Equipment>Overview menu item reads
"Formats"
3) The menu alignment screws up a little in Firefox. Its okay in IE
but it isn't in line with the top of the content area in Firefox. I suspect a box-model
hack is needed (or change of DOCTYPE to trigger standards compliance in IE6).
4) Can I suggest that you increase the text size a bit. To maximise accessibility also
consider specifying your font-size in ems. 0.8em looks good here.
Those things
aside, that's a nice site you've got.
Cheers.

We have been charging £50/hr for
nearly 2 years.

Don't write us off, as we can typically
master an album for about £300.

Well, we never have people complaining
about our pricing. We always go out of our way to give good customer satisfaction, and we
don't slug our customers with hidden extras. Most of our clients comment that we are
underpriced for our quality of service.
Quote:

NO! I HATE PMC's!
They have no subtlety or feel, which is essential (imho) for mastering.
Have
another look at our site, there is lots of info on our monitors, and quite a few
pictures.

Hi RowBoffin,
Thanks for your comments.
The speed issue could be
our host's server. I am considering moving the site.
Unfortunately, our website
designer went out of business, so I am struggling to update maintain the site myself. I
will fix that rollover, but the Firefox issue may take some more time and
investigation.
I will have a look at the text size as well.
Again
thanks for your comments

I would like to second that. Loveley job, good to see you up and running!
Sorry BMW but I smelt a rat earlier in the year and thought I was being duped by a web
looney [which I know you are, but not a malicious one ]. Must stop
eating things i find in the meadows. But theres none of the music you sent me on the site.
Is this all new stuff?

proud of it. I'm actually a pro session singer, so the aim is to do a polished

It's very much a home-grown effort - what took ages was tidying up 9 years of work and
getting it all in one place! There's actually quite a bit of material after that long.
Comments on the site useability would be most welcome. www.ackworthstudio.co.uk Cheers Alan

JayH, you're new here obviously. This thread is about sites (although it's quite ironic
that I could only find two 2005 gigs on your link). This site has an original look and a
cool menu. Personal shots at the geezer are somewhat daft. Which brings me to gerard...
glasshouses, dear boy. And your new "cynical" style of posting is quite tiresome already.

Yep, very good pro looking site. This is how
it should be done IMHO. I thought he looked cool personaly, bit too close to the Dylan
circa '75 look, but then most of us look like someone else.
Not quite as good
as the Billy Harvey one you introduced us to Rob, that's still my all time favourite.
One day I'll have the time to learn Flash, but by then i won't need a site anymore

I'm of the same mind as GlynB, the Dylan influence... One song? You gotta have more
than one? No?
Nice design, but if the Billy Harvey one is the one i'm thinking
of (by sofake?) then that will take some beating.
Then again that one probably
cost a lot more than this one.

Can't see much wrong with your studio site if that's the one you're referring to?
I think you have to appreciate that there are different types of site design for
different purposes. For a band or solo artist you'd expect a site to be more 'arty' than
for a straight forward business site. If a band is looking for a studio they want the
information presented in a clear way, they don't need fancy graphics and flash animation,
they need the facts.
Of course it's imnportant that the site looks clean and tidy,
that the links work properly, that the spelling and grammar are correct, etc, otherwise it
doesn't give a good impression. But it's not too helpful to compare an artist's site with
a business site (unless the business is web design maybe) as they are for different
purposes.
One major pet hate for me is when people 'go live' with their site
way before its ready and then make all sorts of appologies for the way it looks. If the
site ain't ready, and you know it isn't ready, then don't publish, simple really.
A
bad site with errors and blank pages does people no favours, maybe more harm than good. if
people come to the site and its rubbish they might not come back when its fixed. Until the
main site is ready go with MySpace IMHO.

This is an excellent thread, just what I was looking for ! My site is currently
being coded by a xhtml guru friend of mine and should be up and running in the next month
or so. (So these links will not be active at time of first posting)... www.abitfunkdub.co.uk www.abitfunkdub.com I
will be giving away 12 mp3s of my tunes at 96kbps,which make up an alblum called "A Bit
Funk Dub", which you can download and keep (if you want to !) I will be
(attempting to) sell the same tunes at 256kbps if the site has any success, for
£5. That is my "business model" for the site. Yet to see if it has any kind of
a future, but fingers crossed.

The overall design looks excellent, very slick and totaly professional IMO. However, there
are some link issues, especaily when you click on a link sometimes a white page with some
basic text appears, and on every link i tried there was a white flash before a apge
started to load. maybe just teething troubles, but maybe you're unaware?
Were
those supposed to be video clips on the effects page or just still shots? If video, it
didn't work, which is a shame because it looked really interesting!
Anyway,
great job, so far, like to see it when its finished and fully functional.

Hows about SOS creating a permanent thread at the top of this "Web Music" section which
extracts all the web addresses in threads like this, and puts them all in one list (maybe
even with some kind of rating system).

After a couple of years of exchanging views and getting pretty useful some advice off all
the nice people on this forum, I finally have a chance to show you some of my tunes.
http://www.abitfunkdub.co.uk/

http://www.abitfunkdub.com/ The style is a bit of a mish-mash of real instruments mixed with electronica,
obviously some funk and dub influences. My first album, just cutting my creative teeth
really !

Imagine my glee when I
logged into SOS after a few months and found this here. I designed this site as a freebie
for a friend of mine a couple of months back. The complements on the website are very
much appreciated. The comments about Pete are neither here nor there - if I started taking
potshots at artists that looked a bit odd I'd be here a long time. His lack of gigs is
down to a mixture of him getting married and moving to the states, me being overworked and
him not being too web savvy when it comes to updates. By the way, if any wants a copy of
the featured calendar script, feel free to give us a shout.
Anyway, my main
reason for logging in was to present a wiki site that I'm setting up at a domain I've had
for a while:
http://www.promixing.com
Due to the nature of wikis, it's
one of those things where I can only do so much - I'm relying on others more knowledgeable
than myself to fill in most of the gaps.
So, pop along, flex your grey matter
and help out - there's a hoard of words that need to be added or completed.
Please do.
Cheers.
