Just a modest spec bump... I got excited for a sec. At least they gave them something...

Very modest.
And no thunderbolt or USB3.
However, this means
my 2010 system doesn't feel dated - which is nice.

OW... no thunderbolt! Now I can't attach my... er.. well...
At least it's
still the most powerful and expandable system of the line.
(for the record, Ivy
Bridge apparently is not suited for multiple sockets)

I was thinking that, except mine's a 2009
EFI'ed to a 2010 with a hex 3.33 for £450, feeling smug about the DIY upgrade at the
mo'! I 'feel' today's update to the MacPro's could be it for that type of PC from
Apple... if you want Logic and OSX/iOS think mobile!

I don't get what you're all getting excited about - this is a slap in the face for macpro
users. This is a 2 year old model that's had a minimal chip upgrade - that's it. Most of
the macpro crowd are pretty pissed. Rumours have now been spreading around that there will
be a E5 chip macpro in 2013 .... but that's ages away. Maybe everyone will have switched
to PC by then and then Apple can ligitimately say no one is buying macpros anymore so we
stopped production.
What's more, it seems the 17" mac book pro is also going
to be dropped.

I agree, its not much of an upgrade, but
at least it *is* an upgrade and they didn't discontinue it..
I've got a 2008
MacPro which is still very fast and does everything I need it to. I don't think I will
need to upgrade it for a least another year or two.

thedomus: I may be interested in
doing the same to my 2009 MacPro some time soon. May ask how/what you did it/used?
On the rest: this, uhm, update is not worth the name and is a slap in the face. It
looks to me almost as if Apple was actually ready to discontinue the line, heard the
protests from the video editing pros and changed their mind. For how long?
On
the other hand, it could also be that they're simply lengthening intervals between updates
only for the MacPro, figuring that a well specced machine with plenty of expansion could
stand to do without updates for a couple of years, considering the investment. In any
case, the iMac will be updated before 2013 for sure. Confusing times.

Yep, they decided it was a little cheeky to
shout it was new without any useful changes like TB etc...

I think the thing that bugs people the most about the macpro is the lack of information.
How can it be a problem for Apple to tell us they will discontinue or ungrade the macpro
if they are not selling that many anyway? Why does it have to come as a leak 2 years after
the last release that there's a bigger upgrade coming in 2013. Probably buying a macpro
today is going to be fast enough for anything we might want to run on it anyway, but
that's not the point. The macpro is still a 2 year old model but still with the same price
tag as 2 years ago. And what about warning people the 17" macbook pro is going to be
stopped? Why not let those who want to buy them still have the option? I just don't get
it... And of course I don't want to go to pc desmond - the thought sends
shivers through me !!

Hi Clisma, I bought a Intel Xeon W3680 3.33 GHz 12MB 6.4GT/s Hex (i7 980X) off ebay
(flew in from Shanghai!) and then used a firmware updater from HERE to
enable the chip on the 2009 mobo. If you have a single cpu model its dead easy to
swap out, although you will need cpu cleaners/thermal paste (Arctic). I've also
upgraded the GPU to ATI Radeon 5770, put in 1333Mhz RAM from OWC (32GB) and installed
OWC's Accelsior SSD PCI card for OS & Projects! (it's expensive but I highly recommend
installing one... 700MBs read/write!) It's interesting that the MacPro hasn't
technically changed that much (except CPU, GPU card) since 2009, even the mono! Good hunting! Dom

My MacPro does what it's supposed to do perfectly. It runs enough virtual instruments and
plugins, does not crash etc. I use the mac professionaly on a daily basis in my studio. And it is a 2006 model! THAT's 6 YEARS OLD!! I can wait for 2013, no problem. (note: I have to admit the Pro
Tools HD|2 DSP helps, and I'll be adding a UAD2 Quad next week)
