Non profit event and licence

What if you are organising a non-profit event and someone will be DJing some music, mostly
foreign film soundtracks, does the organisation need a licence to do this ? The event is
an exterior film projection in a public park and a DJ will fill the pre-screening with
some film music.
Thanks.

Frank, here in the US the copyright laws stipulate a license for any "public performance"
without regard to whether there is any money to be collected or not. So copyrighted music
in the park by other than the original artist or writer would require a license to be held
by the promoter.
Some exceptions include music for worship or music played by
a store which is selling music.
It's possible that music held by entities
outside of the US might provide some exceptions for non-profits.

Thank you, what you said makes sense. I'm in Canada, and it's probably the same.
Is there some kind of license package for this ? Or you need to clear the DJ set song by
song ?
I guess this has to be paid to some canadian organization but most of
the music is foreign without any distro here, oldies LP, rarities... How to advise this ?

You will need a licence or permission from the copyright holder(s). The copyright
holder(s) MIGHT waive any fees, royalties, whatever, for the cause. Or they might not.

s/charityandcommunity/Pages/default.aspxThis is what you need to read. If you're licensed by the PRS, you won't need to contact anyone else for this kind
of thing, and as far as I can tell, they might offer you a discount. I don't
know about showing the films, though.

Good stuff and probably holds true anywhere, but just a reminder to all
that the O/P is in Canada.
Cheers. Mike

Yeah, there's a similar organisation in Canada called SOCAN. They shall provide licence
for music use in a film projection context/event. The film itself is cleared. Thanks all.
