Loving Lewitt LCT640 Microphone new
      #993041 - 15/06/12 03:19 PM
I've got a lend of this mic, tried it out on a few things and my god, what can I say! WOW.
Now bare in mind I've never had anything above the £200-300 price range for a condenser before so you'd expect there to be an improvement but I wasn't expecting such a massive improvement.

I was wondering why SOS haven't reviewed this mic yet?
Reading other reviews, a couple of them compared it to U87 which is quite a statement as its half the price. So it got me thinking, for those of us who cannot afford a fairchild and other industry standard must have tools, what are the options for similar performance without the status symbol price tag? I might treat myself to a pre amp and compressor/eq to go with the Lewitt but there is so much out there. Any suggestions?

There's a review in the upcoming (August) issue!

Glad you liked it, it's an innovative mic and seems to really deliver the goods

As far as good value/high quality preamps and compressors go, the Golden Age stuff is often mentioned. The Pre 73 and Comp 54 are both based on Neve designs but cost significantly less than their inspiration. I think Reviews Editor Matt Houghton has plenty of experience with these two products.

Cheers!

Chris

For good reasonable price combination I would suggest the Royer R-101 ribbon mic and the DAV BG1 pre-amp, at least for stereo recordings. Superb sound.
