Simple USB Audio interface

Hi,
We're soon to be receiving a Yamaha Upright Silent Piano (essentially an
acoustic piano you can alternate as a digital piano and play "silently" with headphones).
My studio is upstairs and the piano will be downstairs for the whole family but I'd still
like to use it to record ideas into my MacBook Air and then transfer them.
I'd
like the option to record both MIDI and Audio data (piano has MIDI & Aux Out - I think
Stereo 1/4" jack) and hear both the output of the digital piano and a click from the
sequencer through headphones.
I have a MOTU 828 in my studio and don't want to
keep unscrewing and unplugging it each time so I'm in need of a small, portable,
inexpensive, USB, Mac-happy interface.
Any recommendations appreciated.

The venerable M-A Fast track pro should suit your needs very well.
I know not
of macs but I have never had any problems getting a pro to work on any computer, XP PRO,
XP Home, WMCEdition(!) and Win764bits.
Vins latency tests show the pro to be
pretty good (better than much newer kit!) but if you want the dog's for latency in a
small, very cost effective package look at the NI Komplete Audio 6.
How far
away is your studio from the piano? You might be able to link pro and MOTU via S/PDIF with
some low loss TV downlead.
Dave.

Thanks, Dave.
The newer Avid version comes with PT9 bundled for a good price so
that might be the way to go.
The piano will be a long way away from my studio
and any attempts to run cables through the house will end in a messy divorce!

I think the Io2 from Alesis would be good for you. Not high end , but hands on (knobs) and
has all the functions you need. It won't break the bank and so will not make you cry if
you drop it! Dave

No MIDI Daggs and the latency
report was not that hot?
Don't know about the iO2 but don't Alesis use bog S
drivers for their budget usb kit?
Dave.

Nice but pricey and no MIDI.

The no MIDI put the focusrite out.
I'm also wary
of the iO2 driver possible issue. Not too much love for it in reviews. May be fine for
my simple needs or it may not....
Fast Track Pro with PT9 bundle leading the
field so far!

I have a piano at home with an RME Babyface on top of it. Works fine with
midi, has a decent preamp should you be needing that, and a very good headphone amp. Also, low enough latency when playing virtual instruments. (I use Ableton
Live for sketches at home sometimes (studio is Pro Tools).)

The Alesis Multimix 8 will be too big and the RME Babyface too much (money!).
A
Fast Track Pro plus PT9 for under £120 has been ordered.
Thanks for all the
suggestions.

No fair shifting goalposts Daggs! The
mention was of the iO2! The original brief was for a SIMPLE usb interface.
The
Fast track pro is about as simple as you really want to get (ONE mic input is 'king
silly!) and the NI Ka6 is still fairly simple, just two more line ins and usb 2, but much
later converters and drivers.
Check Vins thread to see if he has run an oily
rag over the Saffire 6.
Dave.
