I installed Win7 yesterday and once the install was complete then the updates started - nothing wrong with that and a considerable number of files were downloaded (190+meg) and installed.

I turn on today and SP1 update starts (another 100+ meg) - and as soon as SP1 was installed, the computer reboots and then says important updates are ready to install - why didn't they install with SP1? why didn't SP1 go on with the first trench of updates which installed the day before?

I can understand a big dollop of udates are installed on first booting after a clean install, but why loads of others immediately after? Does SP1 for example flag up succeeding updates?

Yeah, Microsoft like to update their updates on a daily basis.

The three main OS disciplines have separate reactions to the statement "Updates Available".

Linux User "Ooh loads of updates, I'll have the lot."

PC User "Aargh! Not again!"

Mac User "Only $50, seems reasonable."

Yes. Some updates are only valid or relevant when other things have been updated... and the update process often isn't complete until the machine had been restarted. Consequently, it is inevitable that an update is likely to trigger a further update in sequence until your machine had completely caught up with the current state of play.

As it happens, I went through the same process over the weekend with a new Win7/64 install. It takes while, but it's not difficult and my machine was completely sorted within a few hours.

Yep, I suppose it's an excuse to make a cuppa and making sure the biscuit tin is well stocked, they should send a packet of Hobnobs with the installation DVD. And of course it allows a bit of time to look into the manuals that never get read when we buy software

If it arrives, it may be little more than an aggregate of all the "Patch Tuesday" updates so far. What would you wish to see changed?

That's fine.
It'll save time when rebuilding.
SP1 + countless updates and patches to the updates = 100+ downloads and reboots.
SP2 = 1 download + 1 reboot.

The only people to lose out would be the IT technicians that charge by the hour.

I had the same problem but for me it was different, the problem was due to the Operating system installation CD that I was using. If you are using some SP2 that are not the newer versions, they find it hard overwriting on the SP1 version. Therefore, the updates have to be done. When I contacted support, this is what I was told.... suspected spam link removed

It used to be possible to go the the Microsoft web site (or perhaps it was msdn) and get all the updates in one package. Very useful if you had multiple machines to update as you could burn them to CD and only download them once (shows how long it is since I did this since today you would stick them on a ramkey)

Computer upgrades and system updates can be a bother, but quit necessary more spamming removed...

It's increasingly the case where a seller doesn't supply a disk, some supply a recovery disk - though my friend bought an HP i5 laptop that came with a routine which was to create 'recovery disks' so we tried it out just to see and the thing didn't work! luckily I had made an image with other software first.

Many also include a recovery partition on the hard drive - but what happens if the hard drive goes pop?

So in many cases you're left with having to buy the install DVD separately, which is very handy to have around!

Get an image done of the c:drive. I use Acronis TrueImage which they used to give away free on magazines. Had many years of service out of it, though I am beginning to read of failings with it. There is another free version of image software called Macrium, it looks very good but for the life of me, I cannot get it to work.

But what an image does is takes a complete snapshot of a drive. If the drive goes pop, or you want to upgrade the drive you simply boot from the image boot cd, navigate to the image, point to the drive you want to install on and a little tiome later, you're back where you were, every installed, activated etc

I haven't been using Win7 long enough but from what I can see, there is an imaging facility that comes with it, but I think you would need a Win7 original disk to boot from when recovering the image

I would. At worse the should be a slipstream'd disk with custom drivers and such and that should only really be from the big box brands (HP/Dell), otherwise the should always be a disk in there. Personally I'd return the system for a refund if they wouldn't give me it as the whole concept of a recovery partition is a joke.
