Bass Strings for Harmony H22
      #993493 - 18/06/12 10:52 PM
Hi y'all,

I am not primarily a bassist but I have this 1966-ish short-scale semi-acoustic and was thinking of getting new strings for it:

http://harmony.demont.net/guitars/H22/110.htm

There are warnings about the required tension. The length of the strings from the furthest peg to the end of the tailpiece is 42" if that helps.

Any ideas on what would fit and sound best most gratefully received.

Cheers
M

Strings are very personal, it's always a compromise between the feel of the string thickness and tension under your fingers.

However, Rotosound make a short scale set in the Swing Bass 66 range. Check them out here if you like. They are 40, 50, 75, 90, and should be an excellent starting point.

PS. With a shorter scale string tensions are always a little lower when tuned to concert pitch, so nothing to worry about there.

Thanks Andy - a starting point is what I need

I'm confused by the string length of 32.5" quoted by Rotosound. I measured 42" plus some silk winding length on my bass from tailpiece to D-String peg...

Cheers
M

Rotosound bass strings are designed so that only the silk wrapped section should be wound around the tuner post. So the measurement of 32.5" you have seen on their site is the distance from the ball end to the point where the silk wrapping starts, you then have a further section of silk wrapped string making up the remaining length.

The silk wrap should end between the tuning post and nut. To double check on the Harmony, measure the string length required from the tailpiece to a point about 1/4" beyond the nut. Then use the table at Rotosound to decide whether you need short scale or medium scale.

Thanks Andy. 36.5" would seem to mark it out as long scale from Rotosound...

It currently has 30-year old roundwounds on it, something like 35 60 75 90, so presumably the Rotos will be very similar except sounding better.

I did a bit more digging and the bass model seems fairly well loved and players seem to like flatwounds on them but they're a heavier guage I think - seems to be an expensive business experimenting with bass strings!
