Logic not opening - spinning multi-coloured pizza of despair new
      #993914 - 21/06/12 11:40 AM
So certain (larger) Logic projects are not opening for me for some reason. I try to load them and as it runs through all the plug-ins etc it gets stuck with the spinny disc of doom. What is double odd is that it looks like it is hanging when trying to load one of Logic's own delay plug-ins.

I am not at my music computer now so I can't post it but the error report is as long as your arm.

Any ideas anyone? (Desmond?)

As ever, really appreciate any help...

Luke

Hmm, I think I can hear the bat phone ringing...

Some things to try:-

Check you are not running in memory and possibly corruption issues. Are you in 32-bit or 64-bit. ow much ram do you have? Are you using a mixture of plugins and the AUBridge?

Is it only some particular songs that don't open?

Try starting Logic holding CONTROL and disabling the audio engine, then load your song. Does it load now, or not? If it does, go back to the audio driver preferences and re-enable Core Audio. Does Logic hang now, or does the project work as expected?

Try opening older versions of the project - do they open?

If you suspect a plugin issue, try temporarily moving the AU component files out of the plugin directory and restarting - do the projects load now? If so, quit, and put a handful of plugins back, and checking to see whether your projects open - this can help you narrow down an issue to a particular plugin...

See how that lot goes and get back to me...

Desmond a thousand thank yous. I'll have to give your tips a go this evening whe I am back home, but I am on 32 bit version with 4 gig of RAM. I recently uninstalled Automap, but to be honest I have had these problems prior to that anyway.

I'll see how I get on tonight and report back.

Many thanks again

Are you on Lion, or an earlier OS?

If you're on Lion, in my experience OSX no longer runs comfortably with apps with only 4GB of ram - Lion takes up a lot more memory than Snow Leopard, and is already hitting swapspace by the time you run your first application... leaving not a lot of room for plugins, projects, samples etc...

Ahh - that could be a problem - mine is an older iMac (not THAT old though - 2008ish) and is maxed at 4 Gig of RAM. And I am on Lion. I don't think it would but would switching to 64 bit make the slightest difference? Go back to SL? Headache forming...

Might be worth checking your model on the internets because most Macs can unofficially support more ram than they officially support. My old 2008 MBP officially supported 4GB's but could actually take 6GB without problems, etc.

No. As it is, when you boot your machine, and run Logic, you've probably only got maybe 1GB free RAM space left as it is. Running in 64-bit is not going to give you any more physical ram - it just lets Logic be able to use more than 4GB of ram if you have it.

I'm not saying that, I'm just saying that your issue may be memory related, and it is possible to get corrupted projects in Logic when there is not much free memory - and I was just mentioning the various related issues that might be causing this, *if* it's what you're seeing.

While Snow Leopard generally worked fairly smoothly on 4GB on my old machine, Lion definitely chugged into swap space and got bogged down in 4GB on the current MBP - and giving it more ram solved the issue.

Just stuff to bear in mind as your troubleshoot.

OK - so a possible option *might* be to slap in more RAM and then switch 64 bit (as then the extra RAM could be used? Provided of course the iMac can take more memory.

I'll hit the google machine now...

(I'll do the checks you suggest first obviously)

Thanks again for your help - I think you have probably saved many lives with your posts!

My 2007 Alu iMac could unofficially take 6Gb and worked very well with that amount. Yours should too.

Running Lion on pre-Lion machines is a bad idea. Everything is worse: CPU- and RAM usage, track-count in Logic, not to mention no more Spaces, no Rosetta support.

UPDATE -I stuffed in some additional RAM - now running 6 gigs as per earlier posts and it is all working perfectly (fingers crossed). Really regret updating to Lion in retrospect, I have had a few issues since then, gladly most are now sorted out.

Massive thanks again to Desmond - lifesaver.

Cool, glad you're back up and running.

My Lion regrets: they broke Spaces, I lost Windowshade, and lost access to a whole bunch of PPC programs I still used (SoundDiver, various Roland and Korg editor and utility software etc).

The price of progress, and why hanging onto older machines can still make sense, despite being not quite as compact...

Mee too

For me, the most annoying aspect is lack on menu-bar indicator to remind me which desktop I'm currently in.

I eventually found a tool called "ReSpaceApp", which kinda brought that back. But it wasn't perfect and has now been renamed "TotalSpaces" (cost $12).

Haven't checked out this incarnation, yet. (Perhaps I've just gotten used to doing without the info I want). TotalSpaces seems to have loads more features than I need - really just want the menubar indication.

If anyone knows any other ways to bring that back, do shout.

Thanks for that, I'll check it out.

I had the same (or a similar) problem regarding the display indicator, and my solution is workable enough for me:- I have the same background across all spaces, but with colour variations (there was a nice app under SL that did this on the fly, which also alas doesn't work in Lion), and a nice fat desktop number in the corner - so as I switch, I always have the number of the current desktop onscreen...

However, I would like the get back to having multiple rows of spaces so I can move up and down as well as left and right - I'll check out that app...

Yep - I guess that could work, but I'm not hugely keen on leaving a specific piece of desktop without windows on it. Often, most/all of the screen is in use.
