Mesa Boogie v-twin repair
      #994308 - 23/06/12 09:55 AM

Anyone ever take one of these apart, mines got a cracking pot I need to fix - looking for pointers / pitfalls

I did a bit of googling and could not find any instructions, apart from a few people saying they were a bitch to get apart

Trying my fav forum first, if no replies will see if there is a specific mesa forum anywhere and then post there

Thanks

V-Twin... Still on my wish list after all these years

Never had one in pieces though, so can't help there. I'm sure the schematics are easy to find but I've never seen a service manual on my travels.

In my experience the degree of difficulty in taking things apart has little to do with the actual equipment and everything to do with the person doing it. The more things you strip down and rebuild, the easier they get.

However, if it's just a crackling pot you might be able to get it fixed without dismantling. A few careful applications of switch cleaner to the point where the pot shaft comes through the threaded sleeve might do it for you, capillary action might well draw enough down the shaft into the pot to get it cleaned and lubed.

Thanks Zen

I did consider your suggestion but was wary that I could end up with fluid on the circuit board etc... and possibly cause a short.

The problem I think is lack of use. When I was playing live it got used at least twice a week. Now it just comes out from time to time. Its quite nice to use as a pre for a bass.

No need to worry Greg. Apply a little at a time rather than flooding it, give it a minute or so to work through and then rotate the pot a few times to wipe the track. Then leave it for 30 mins or so to dry out.

+1 on the switch cleaner.

I've got a V Twin and they sound great for what they do. Works straight into a decent Pre for that Mesa Sound. Great on Bass too.

Collectors items now?

BTW I think I got mine for £80 quid on the bay. Bargain. Built like tanks!

Thanks for the advice guys

I have given the unit a squirt and the knobs a twiddle this evening and will leave over night before trying tomorrow

@ _Six_ i was quite surprised to find one on ebay with a buy now price of £335 so you may be right in terms of collectability. Last time I looked was some 6 years ago and they were regularly selling for £250 so you got a bargain. I have had mine from new so paid full price.

Mine's the Mark I without the adjustment switch on the base of the unit. I've played about with different rated tubes but still say the stock Mesa 12AX7's sound the best.

They should reissue that pedal.. It's legendary!

Hi Greg,
Pop over to www.musicradar.com and ask. There is a tech there called ICBM who loves Mesas so I am sure he will help you.

A quick report back and a thankyou to Zen for his method - no more scratchy pots and no need to take the v-twin apart
