This free Arturia Minimoog then ...

... is anyone thinking of going for it? What's the catch (no such thing as a free
lunch, etc) Are they hoping that we will be so impressed with the 'basic' minimoog
implementation that we will fork over our hard-earned for the 'full' version? Or is this a
cunning way of getting our email addresses ..?

All of the above, I should think! But you can always remove yourself from mailing lists
and such, and if it turns out not to be as awesome as they presumably think it is, then
you can just not upgrade. I'd be tempted to try it, but I've got as much Minimooginess as
I could ever need thanks to my old Creamware cards.
Cheers!

I'm sure I'll download it, play with and leave it my VST folder and not use it much. The
problem with free stuff is that I tend to attribute less value to it, so it gets
overlooked in favour of stuff I have paid for. I've used the Arturia Moogs
before, but can't recall whether they were any good or not.

Its nice - its free - I got it 'cos everyones is down on this company and I wanted to make
my mind up by having something that will last longer than a demo. I dont have anything
Moog based, and so far it sounds great. In my mind certainly the best free thing I have
ever downloaded.

FYI : the Arturia site links to their Facebook page. From there, you click on a link to
their giveaway page, where you click 'Like', accept the application (hhmmmm) which sends
you an email with a link and an activation code.
A bit convoluted but I got
there... and now just waiting for the email
I'm not down on Arturia per se -
just not seen anything that I'd like to buy so far. I'll reserve judgement on the Minimoog
when I try it later.

The facebook
route not only is convoluted, but the email doesn't seem to arrive. I went to the Arturia
site direct (and had to keep refreshing as it kept timing out). But once had added (fake)
name and (spambox) email, the email with links and activation code came thru straightaway.
(Still waiting on the email via the facebook route)

Oh - and when trying to download from the links they give, get
yourself a bittorrent client and use the torrent link - then you're not reliant on their
(very overloaded) webserver. See - torrents are a force for the good!

IF, and it is a big if, the website is actually working when I get home, I'll have a go,
but it seems over subsrcribed and not possible to get to their site easily at the moment.

I used Matt's link shortly after I posted and have registered (as Rick Cartman ) got the
link to the D/L page, but wont be able to D/L until tonight. I have got the activation
code as well. I note the reason why they are giving it away is because their
licence is ending with Moog. Presumably because Moog are focussing on software as well
these days?

I'm just curious to see how it compares to my Gmedia MiniMonsta. I don't really need two
versions of the same synth so it's probably unlikely I'll be upgrading to the Arturia
anytime soon (I'm trying to wean myself off softsynths at the moment anyway, far too many
of the damned things!) but it'll be an interesting opportunity to see to what degree the
inherent Arturia-ness that people often say plagues their synths is noticable here.

I know Elf is a big fan of the miniMonsta. I am going to compare the filter on the Arturia
to my UAD Moogfilter, just as a reference, as the UAD Moog is fantastic. I've no idea how
it compares to the original, but I'm happy with it.

Ordered mine. I saw a thread recently where some members expressed dislike for the
Arturia products in general. I've been using the Prophet V and JP-8 on demo for the last
2 weeks and they soudns pretty good to me. But, there's something clinical about them -
perfect pitch, no perceptible noise floor etc. But I went on the site today to order my
free mini. none of the that subtle stuff matters to me too much in a busy mix. As solo
instruments - dunno.

Had a quick play around with it last night. It was OK, but nothing special. Is it me or
does the filter have a sharp resonant peak? I'm sure I had everything set to zero, so just
the raw unfiltered wave; sweeping with the filter creates a resonant hump. I'll double
check later, but I'm sure I had turned the resonance down to zero. On my UAD
Moog, I had to turn up the resonance to just below self-oscillation to achieve a similar
sound, but I certainly preferred the smoother cut off on the UAD Moog. I don't
think the Arturia goes into self oscillation either, but didn't spend that long playing
with it.

So I went the Facebook page and still nothing. When I checked last night, there were a lot
of people complaining about it - seems that that route is not popular and doesn't seem to
be delivering the goods. And seems to be just a marketing scam to get more 'likes' on
FB.
So far very unimpressed.

Also looks like the license thing was right - the Arturia page announces that it is now
the 'mini-V' (no mention of 'moog' in the name)

I think the Arturia Minimoog V is actually quite decent... I can get some thumping and
authentic basses from it, so I'm happy. P

Got the email - which had no Date: header, so will likely fall foul of some spam
filters.
The FTP link it gave points to a server which currently seems to be
refusing connections.
The BitTorrent link they gave worked fine.

Hey. I received my e-mail last night. Downloaded it and registered it with no
fuss at all.
Just tried a few of the presets so far. It sounds great to my
ears. Very usable and I can see me using this in a few tracks.

I don't use many softsynths like this, but I was a bit shocked at how greedy it is with
the processor. I know my MacPro is a little long in the tooth now (almost a whole 5 years
old), but surely playing a chord shouldn't max out a quard core Xeon??? The processor
meter is swinging about madly on this thing! Now I see why people still freeze tracks so
much. Sounds ok to me. I've found a tweakable 'minimoog lead' sound for one
track that wanted it. But, to be honest, if it's a driver for me to buy the
full version, it's pretty much failed. I went straight to ebay to look up model D prices,
and started thing about phatty or voyager. hmmnnnn ... maybe the 'mug Elf for
his model D' might still be an option ...

Arturia are pretty uninspiring. I
think they spend too much on marketing and licensing and far too little on code and synth
design. But to be fair you wont be playing many chords with the voyager or model d.
Although you can link 16 voyagers up through midi for polyphony if you really have cash to
burn..

I resented being asked to allow an app so didn't go any further. Not furnishing arturia
with more info than I care to give. And anyway, I have a strict anti-app policy on
facebook.
I'll buy minimonsta sometime. I like it more from experience with
the demo.

There's no need for Facebook (and I'm a Facebook-shunner too!). There are a few copies
