Question about iMac Firewire Port

HI All
My Audio Interface is an M-Audio Profire 610 which has 2 Firewire
1394 ports.
The iMac spec states that teh iMac has a Firewire 800 port.
Will the Profire work with the 800 port? Will I need a new cable?
Thanks

yes, it will work with the FW800 port.. and yes, you will need a new cable.
You need a cable that has FW400 at one end and FW800 at the other.

If the iMac Firewire port is funcioning to spec. it will run the 610 OK. You will need a
cable with a suitable plug for the FW800 port on one end, one for the FW400 socket on the
other. But you knew this really!
I say "funcioning to spec" only because I
vaguely remember one batch of Mac computers that had bad Firewire ports? I haven't a clue
if it was the iMac or something else, or quite when it was. But if you are unlucky an
iMac is rather closed-system, it isn't going to let you swap in a replacement Firewire
card. I expect a Mac expert will be able to put your mind at ease on this point.

Thank you for the replies,I suspected I would need a new cable if the Profire Interface
was compatible, which I now know it is.
I have looked on the Apple Store site
and the cable is £24.95,however ebay can supply one for a lot less than that, also an
adaptor so I can use my existing cable.
At least I don't have to buy a new
Interface.

Yes to both, you
need a 400 to 800 FireWire cable.

As you can buy a 1.4m 800/400 cable on eBay
for £2.99 inc. postage, it seems foolish not to try that one first :-) Quality CAN be an
issue for longer Firewire cables, but if that length is sufficient I think you'll be ok
with the cheapie one. It's rarely worth paying Apple's price for ANYTHING of course
:-)
I'm dubious about integral adapters, for Firewire or anything else. They
can stick out too far, making the connection vulnerable. And the added weight can stress
a socket that, too often, is only mounted by its solder connections to a circuit board.

I don't think I would like to trust an Adaptor,I much prefer the correct cable in one
piece.
I was wondering about the quality of the cheaper cables, but for that
price it won't hurt to try one,as you say,Apples price is far to much.
