Another giant has left the comedy playground..... Whilst it is tragically sad
that he has passed, there is now the possibility that someone in the Beeb might have the
nounce to show some tribute - hopefully The Plank..

I watched The Plank the other month. Quite a strange short film, but reasonably
entertaining.

I had the pleasure of meeting him, a few years ago, when my old Uni awarded him an
honourary degree. As he couldn't make it to one of the scheduled graduation ceremonies
they had a presentation especially for him, which I did the sound and lighting for. A
thoroughly nice, and very funny man.
I also had Norman Wisdom speak at my BA
graduation, but that's another story . . .

Goodbye Eric - we'll miss you, but at 89 you had a good innings and your work will live on
for ever. RIP Martin

Such an enormous depth of work. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about the guy. He was
always there in my lifetime, like the Queen I suppose! But reflecting upon his passing, he
did represent an age of elegant comedy for me. I don't really see any sort of legacy. I
have no time for the new breed. RIP Eric. A long and productive life. I hope it was a
happy one, by and large.

Yes, one of the last of a special breed of comedian. I heard a lovely clip on BBC R4
yesterday where he was being asked about his deafness. He explained that he only realised
he was going deaf when he couldn't hear the audience laughing any more, so he had hearing
aids built into those (empty) glasses frames becuase he found that more comfortable to
wear than conventional aids. He went on to say, in that lovely self-deprecating way he
had, that it was only then that he realised his audience weren't laughing anyway... Hugh

I really enjoyed the tributes on Radio 4 news programs, and I am looking forward to a
longer obituary on Friday. Even at the peak of his fame he was a largely unsung comedy
genius. And when PM on Radio 4 played an excerpt from The Plank as one of their tributes,
it was a fitting tribute to a man who was a scriptwriter for The Goons with Spike
Milligan. Andy

As someone who (just about) remembers the Goons when they were first on, Eric Sykes has
been making me laugh for an awfully long time. So I feel sad, but like others I'm looking
forward to the tribute repeats. It would be nice to get some of his work with Hattie
Jacques, I remember that with great affection. CC

I am drawn towards people who have this benevolent twinkle in their eye, and even though
his was a face that followed me through my childhood, every time I stumbled upon him as an
adult, he always made me giggle with his self deprecation and nonsense......but knowing,
truthful nonsense! Dave

His was always gentle humour. The type where nobody gets hurt. That's rare.
BTW
I've got a copy of "The Plank" on DVD. Still as funny as when I first saw it.
