New music course!

Hey all Wasn't quite sure where to post this, hope here is ok. I'm slightly
involved in this - shooting a documentary for my masters project - but should say: a) Its not for profit b) It will not turn you into a rock/pop/dj star c)
Has pretty much nil to do with music technology d) Involves some very fringe,
obscure, leading edge and off radar musical techniques and activities. e) May change
the way you look at, listen to, and create music Its a 6 day summer school
course, running at Bangor University in Wales - cutting edge contemporary classical music,
but aimed at performers and composers of all abilities and outlooks. If anyone wants to
have their sonic and musical imagination intensively stimulated by working with some truly
sublime musicians, details here: http://www.coma.org/deliver/SSchool12Brochure.pdf--------------------- Eye Dog

+1 For Joby Burgess...
Years ago when I was a music undergrad, the university
hired Joby's ensemble for a composers workshop, to play our fledgling student composition
efforts - they were great (that's Joby's outfit, not the compositions.....)

Last time I was involved with the course - recording concerts and workshops in 2008 IIRC -
Joby did some absolutely stunning concerts, amazing musician. But not just Joby, a real
procession of hyper talented performers and composers working in a medium on the fringes
of today's music, but with a degree of integrity and commitment which is generally absent
from rock/pop/dance etc.
Its scaled back a little from its heyday in the late
90's early 00's, but even on the periphery just recording, I always came away inspired and
full of ideas - I got the impression it was very considerably more so for the actual
participants. If you've got a few hundred bucks spare, and can find somewhere local to
stay (or go the whole hog and pay for residential) its the kind of thing that can be quite
literally life changing, and great fun to boot!
Highly recommended.

Just stop
it! No mention of how much this school costs. If you have talent work it on your own.
Watch out for the sharks even if they wear Josephs "techno" dream coat. Musicians today,
must believe in their own talent and many of them have a new network discarding those who
choose to make money with promises such as music schools.
They are mainly
run by old failures, or those who had a hit in the '60's and need money in retirement
because their management f***ed them over. There has never been a better time to push
your own ideas, and this does not need men in suits.
Believe in yourself.
play the clubs, organise your own agent and use facebook to guide people to your music. A
word of caution is, that it really really needs to be good.

To be fair the information is very clear
and upfront. You can see exactly who the people are and exactly how much it costs. Not
all music is club music. You can earn good money from sync, too.

How very odd!
Soundseed, thanks
for this. It's too late for this year but my partner is very interested in this maybe for
next year. As a "contemporary classical" composer she's just the sort of person who might
benefit from this sort of experience.

The summer school is oriented toward people
interested in composing and performing contemporary classical music, with a strong focus
on developing repertoire accessible to non professional musicians, i.e. people doing it
for the love of it. Its a fairly obscure and distinctly non commercial fringe of the music
world, and personally I think its a noble cause and a bit of a cultural gem. The tutors
are typically absolutely outstanding performers and/or composers, in some instances world
class concert hall standard. They offer a doorway to an aesthetics driven sonic and
musical world which is generally closed unless you are studying at BMus or higher level,
with a focus on 20th century onwards.
I posted the information here because I
think it is relevant to people working in rock, pop, dance and soundtracks, and offers the
opportunity to broaden horizons, experiment and develop musical vocabulary in a manner
that is completely unique. Speaking personally, my experience of working with CoMA has
enriched my musical life on so many levels, and I've seen the same benefits to a multitude
of musicians of all ages and backgrounds.
I think it represents the essence of
music as communicative artform in a fashion which is fundamentally human. Its not about
profit, or iTunes, or Facebook, or getting agents, or improving your search engine skills:
its about music and the community of musicians.

This is what happens when you don't have a Wikipedia entry. COMA stands for Contemporary
Music-Making for All and has been around for years. It's mainly associated with the
conservatory end of contemporary composition and does an excellent job in making that area
of music accessible to anyone who's interested in it. It has nothing to do with either
converted-warehouse music 'academies' of questionable merit or with organising short-lived
entertainment events via Twitbook. Apples and oranges. And the occasional kumquat.

Just to conclude things, the course was tremendous ... great location, superb tutors, lots
of amazing concerts, fantastic sense of community ... and absolutely no mention of how you
can use facebook etc to progress your career in music, but lots on how you can play or
compose better for no purpose other than the love of music.
A highlight was a
performance from John Cage's songbook in a pub, which veered between the sublime,
ridiculous, hilarious and moving in equal measures. Suffice to say there were some very
confused and bemused bar staff and locals.
I shot loads of footage for the
documentary - will post a link in due course.
