Roland GI-20 Interface new
      #998280 - 17/07/12 05:19 AM
The GI-20 seems to have been discontinued. Does anyone have a recommendation for a straightforward 13 pin to USB or MIDI interface? The newer Roland GR-55 and V Guitar system are not what I am looking for.

The GI20 and the Axon AX50 are the only 'desktop' units out there worth considering (unless you include foot pedal types or Axon AX100) and both are discontinued. AX50 is the better of the two but its essential software will not run on Lion. The GI20 has front panel controls so can be used in Lion but via a midi interface.

There is a GI20 editor App

If you are pre Lion then get an AX50 on ebay they go for £200 to £280

However this Fishman Triple Play will be out soon and it looks promising

The Fishman unit looks interesting. Not exactly what I'm needing as I already have a 13 pin equipped guitar going thru a GI-20 in my studio. I'm looking for a second unit to use for performances so I don't have to dismantle my studio set up every time I want to use the guitar beyond the studio.....but I'll be interested to try out the Fishman when it hits stores....

By the way, you are correct that there is no OSX.7 driver for the GI-20, however, it works fine using the standard 5 pin MIDI cables thru a basic MIDI to USB box. I use a MOTU MicroLite for both my guitar and keyboard controllers......

Yes that how I use my GI20, thru' a Focusrite Pro24, miss the Axon tho'. Do you use your GI20 to trigger samples in a computer?

You can get the GR range (foot pedal ) to do that but you will have a lot less control over pitch bend and stuff.

I use it almost exclusively to control soft instruments in Logic. Have just started using it with GarageBand and Animoog on my iPad thru the iRig MIDI....hence wanting a second unit...

I use a Brian Moore guitar with a MIDI wired bridge. BM has been promoting a direct MIDI to USB output from the guitar but so far it hasn't actually materialized....

A BM was my quest for a while, though I could not afford it, so did not go for it when I had the chance. Now the Fishman Tripleplay is on the horizon and developed by the guy who developed Axon, I would probably choose that.

My overall experience with midi guitar has been a frustrating one (probably due to my limited guitar skills) if its taught me anything its 'better learn how to play a keyboard'
