Room acoustics - consultancy help wanted

Hi. I'm trying to do music in probably the worst room in the world - pretty much a cube
(16x16x12) with all hard surfaces - I exaggerate only slightly. As you might expect it's
deafening for rehearsals and useless for recording.
I have spent a good length
of time trawling the internet for opinion and reviews on sound treatment, including these
wonderful forums, and realise that it will not come cheap (DIY not an option) and it's
easy to get it wrong or useless. Also the room has to serve other purpose and look decent,
so it can't be turned into some kind of foam and duvet womb.
Before I spend
money on the basis on my semi-informed best guess, would anyone who knows what they're
talking about (i.e. who is familiar with the different products on the market and their
deployment) care to pay the place a visit, for a modest but sensible sum, to advise me how
resources would best be spent? I am (just) in Kent, half an hour by train from London
Victoria or 5 minutes from M25 J3.
I hope it's okay to use the forum in this
way. If interested, please e-mail me on <comm@maplescombe.com> with a brief outline
of your credentials and rates.

Credentials? I think there's lot of people on here that can help, with or without a
diploma, and not wanting any money for a bit forum advice. Auralex advise people on what
treatment might be best for one, or Studio SOS, that would be the best kind of visit
wouldn't it? If you read a lot of those, duvets are often suggested.

Hi, and thanks for all replies and suggestions. However, one name kept coming up: Max
Hodges, a long time stalwart of these boards. I've contacted him and he sounds like a fine
and knowledgable bloke and he's coming to inspect the space next week. I am greatly
looking forward to his opinion and subsequent proposals.

Congratulations, Max is exceedingly knowledgeable and a genuinely nice guy. Very reliable
and very hard working too. Make the most of him. Take the time to think about
what you want to achieve and what your priorities are. If you have a clear idea of your
aims and how you like to work, that will help Max to help you find the best possible
solution. And tell him I said 'HI' Andy

Hi all I hate to hijack threads but I too am after some advice regarding my
room. I've since moved to a bigger space and it' s causing me a real headache. Is there
anyone who can offer any advice? Tea and biscuits will obviously be provided (can't work
without them), and I'll happily pay if needed. I live in Nuneaton, a small town
just off Junction 3 of the M6. It's about 10 mins from Coventry and 30 mins from
Birmingham centre. Thanks guys Paul

Hi Paul If you read to the end of THIS then you'll get the info you require. A bit more than 'tea and biscuits' required, but your investment will be well worth
it! Mike

Max Hodges is the man for this, as already
mentioned.
If you want some Rockwool slabs framed like these...

then I can make them in my garage quite easily.
The cost would be materials, transport and a little for my time. It won't take long to
do and I am close to you in Kent.
However, Max, although more expensive, has
much more experience than me and would do a better job.
