mikes sounding off!

nice piece. Only one point really
" After all, I reckon David Guetta’s
track was rendered catchier by its similarities to ‘Hotel California’, even if he did
actually create that chord progression from scratch (while riding a flying pig)."....
thing is - the Eagles didn't INVENT that chord sequence. It's a basic descending
structure. Hotel Cali at best"assumed" that progression - but it wasn't new then as it
isn't now. Listen to a hundred classic spanish folk songs to here it over and over
again....
Or listen to "we used to know" Jethro Tull ....

That's a fair defense in a general
sense -- two tracks drawing from a common public-domain source, "there's nothing new under
the sun", etc... But you could follow that line of argument all the way to the destruction
of the whole idea of copyright if you wanted ("we're all using the same notes Bach
did..."), and I think it doesn't quite stack up for me in this case. "We Used To Know"
shares a lot of features with "Hotel California", for example, but I listen to those two
tracks and think "oh, they're quite similar", rather than "that's outrageous" -- the
time-signature is different and the last two chords have a distinctly different flavour to
them.
It's clearly a question of degree, but that's why I quite liked the idea
of 'letting the people decide' whether a credit should have been given. Must get round to
setting that up...

my argument was more that David Gs track is its own thing. It doesn't sound like Hotel
California. Moral credits is a nice idea though.

Are we allowed to comment on how he looks? Because he looks like a geeza called Ned the
Nose that I occasionally 'liaise' with. Of course, not the same genetics, but damn
similar. Need a disclaimer in there somewhere. 'Guetta looks like Nerd the Nose
but is in no way breaching Ned's genetic copyright'.

I REALLY must remember that there is another Mike S who is far more important than me...
Had a nasty "What have I done now?" moment when I saw this thread... then I opened
it...

Have you ever seen them in the same place at the same time? Hmmm....

There is a point of view that any arranger who moans about not getting a songwriting
credit for their work should stop being an arranger then, and write their own bloody
tunes!

Nope. But then I've never seen the Eagles
and DG perform together....

I laughed when I read Mike Senior's article, I thought everyone knew the Eagles "ripped"
off Jethro Tull, there's only one chord difference, even the flute and lead guitar
solos have similarities.

Well... some people don't have that flair but are
bloody fantastic at making someone else's tosh into something fantastic (Delia
Derbyshire's arrangement of Ron Grainger's Dr Who theme being just one - slightly obscure
- example ... there are countless other mediocre tunes which have been elevated beyond
recognition by the skills of an arranger, tunes that might otherwise have disappeared into
abject obscurity).
But rather than writing "their own bloody tunes", maybe
there should be some pressure that an arranger gets a few points on record sales (*) and
airplay.
(*) Ha! Record sales! Remember those!
