Ceiling cloud size advice, please... new
      #998893 - 20/07/12 09:11 AM
I am trying to decide on a size for my studio ceiling cloud.

My studio is 264cm wide x 330cm long x 240cm high.

I am trying to decide (in multiples of the common 120cm x 60cm panels) between 180cm x 120cm (marked red on the not-to-scale diagram below), 120cm x 120cm (marked blue) or 120cm x 60cm (marked green).

These will be between 25mm and 100mm thick.

I know the general rule is 'more is better', but I need to find the best size/weight/cost/performance compromise, as I'm not aiming for Abbey Road here ;-)

Thoughts welcome...

It's kinda obvious, but the red one would be best, the purple good, and the green one adequate.

BUT get your speaker away from the wall - move the whole lot away from the wall relocating your speaker stack if need be

I've gone for a modular approach with 4 120 x 60 panels.

Thanks for the replies.

I realise that both more surface area and thicker section will be better, but I'm trying to find the aforementioned balance, otherwise I'd just go for 1ft thick across the whole ceiling.

For instance would I be better with the 1200mm x 1200mm option at 100mm thick, rather than 1800mm x 12mm at 30mm/50mm thick? What about distance from ceiling - some say as flush as poss, others as far away as poss?... and do I need to cover the full monitor width, or is it the reflection point that's most important?

Weight is one factor that concerns me, as wooden-framed 1200mm x 600mm x 100mm panels can weigh-in at 8kg each (ie: 24kg for three) which I think is a lot for hanging from a domestic ceiling (?).

What design (ie: wood or not) and what kind of thickness are you guys using? I'm thinking of non-framed if poss...

The diagram is not to scale so it's difficult to see, but the desk is already spaced 35cm from the wall. The monitors (Quested F11s) are in this void atop 45" Ultimate stands filled with sand and topped with Pro-coustic iso pads. The back of each speaker is only about 13cm from the wall at the centre point, but these have an amp at the back and no rear ports. If I move them (and by necessity, the desk) further away from the wall, I worry I will lose too much room space and place my listening position right in the centre of the room (which I understand is not good).

I should add that I'm already planning to add solid corner chunks to the front wall, with foam panelling all the way between (inc. behind the monitors).

Oh well, looks like I'm on my own with my 'obvious' questions...
