How am I going to do this? Need to monitor from my PC new
      #999024 - 20/07/12 07:02 PM
Hi guys,

Due to up and coming moving of house I am slimming down my kit. Im only in this for a hobby and to be honest, taking ocer the marital bedroom with a 24 channel Soundtracs mixer never was going to have a good wife acceptence factor.

I have repaced it with a Macke Onyx 1620i mixer. Its great. Not as fat sounding as the Soundtracs but no groundloops hey ho.

Anyhow one of the great things about this analogue mixer is all of the tracks can be recorded onto a DAW via the FW link.

But here is the problem. As much as I detest computers I and happily use hardware for everything from sequencing to mixing one thing I do like replacing with the computer is compression. A computer makes it easy to put a compresssor on each of my 1620i's FW channels something that would cost a ton of money otherwise and use a ton of space.

However, this means I have to plug my monitors into my computer and not my mixer to take advantage of hearing the compression as it is applied further down the chain than my mixer. How can I do that. As far as im aware im only allowed to have one device selcted as an interface. Yet here I need to use my 1620i as an input device but I need my computer to output the sound. Is this even possible? I thought it was one ASIO drive per time per computer.

Anyone know a work around?

Think I found the answer. Damn thing didnt come with a manual. Not sure if this was by accident or if your expected to download these days. Shame. Mackie manuals were amongst the best.

Ive found you can use stereo tracks 15/16 as a stereo return from your PC.

Im not able to try this out until the next few days. This is exactly what I want though right? Ill basically play my hardware synths into the mixers inputs and use insert effects as desired on my but rather than listern to all the channels of my mixer ill simply be listering to 15/16 only? Each change I make to each channel will be heard even though im only monitoring 2 channels.

Got this all set up today. I works really easy right out of the box.

Just updating to say if anyone else strugggles with the 1620i in this area, give me a shout.

That's very kind of you Kolakube, but I'm glad you managed to sort things out yourself so quickly - just two hours after your first post before the lightbulb went off, and a further five before you were all sorted

Arrrg, Martin after all that I'm still having problems.

I think computers know I hate them and the feelings mutual. One day the above set up works the next without change it doesn't

I'm about to do a reformat today and if that doesn't solve it just buy a few cheapo compressors and gates and keep it all hardware n return the 1620i for a lesser model.

I know I keep banging on about this but you can do what you want in Logic with any ol' analogue mixer and a multiple input audio interface.

At the same time I know you don't have a MAC any more but just thought I'd mention it
