Boot failure on my G5 PPC new
      #999715 - 25/07/12 10:32 AM
I have a geriatric G5 PPC. In a normal boot, I press the button, a red light goes in inside, then the tiny white power on light and opening chord. But about 1 in 5 times, I get the little red light, then a 'whoosh' kind of fan accelerating sound for a sec or two, then nothing, ie no white light and no chord. So I press power on again, and it boots as normal.

Obviously the long-term solution is to upgrade, but in the meantime, is it anything I should worry about, or can do anything about ?

My Quad G5 did this. I don't understand what the problem was, it would do the same as you describe; starts up fine 99 times out of 100, then you get the one where it whooshes and fails to start, a second push starts fine and not another problem for months. I could never find anything to tell me what the problem was. There is this guide about the red lights:

Probably a PSU issue - mine started doing similar and it eventually got worse and worse until it no longer booted at all!

+1 here.Could be a faulty PS, blown capacitors on the motherboard or any number of things.

In my case the problem remained intermittent but gradually got worse. Even so,I still had difficulty recreating the fault for engineers and given the cost of inspections + shipping eventually decided to buy a S/H refurb PPC while I save for replacement proper.
