Korg or Novation new
      #966955 - 28/01/12 05:53 PM
Im currently in the market for a synth (my first actually). Until now I have been using VST plug-ins for my modest studio set up which I find great but I want a bit of hardware. I have a budget of 600-700 Euros which of course limits my choices but I have been looking into a couple of possibiltites.

First is Korgs X50 & the other which stands out to me is the Novation Ultranova. I would like a mix of synth sounds as well some nice organic instruments.

Any recommendations on this, I am also open to suggestions regarding other good synths which people may be fans of.

What are you looking to add to your sound palette? Most sample based sounds such as strings and piano etc are handled pretty well by VST samplers such as Kontakt or specialist packages like VSL. Of your two choices I would go with the Novation as it looks more hands on, which is one of the main reasons to go for hardware.

Thanks for the reply Richie. I am leaning strongly towards the Novation. I like the dual function it offers in terms of being able to control vst's. I have plug-ins which offer a lot of more organic sounding pianos, organs, brass etc but i am interested in the synth sounds on offer in novation unltranova. In particular the programming possibilties. Asi mentioned before i have a small budget but i want to get the most out of it. Would you recommend any other synths.

Forget about the Novation and hold off until April and bag yourself an Arturia Minibrute, they are 499 euro, it's an analogue synthesizer with an arpeggiator, steiner-parker filter and loads of controls (knobs/sliders), it also has midi and cv/gate (in/out).

As long as you don't mind the diminutive 2 Octave keyboard..

I would recommend a Nord Lead 2, if you can find one second hand. Rack or keyboard version. I have a Nord Rack 2 and it has been central to most of my productions for years.

You could have a look the blofeld, Gaya, Tetra (polyphonic) or Mopho Keyboard, Evolver Desktop (monophonic)... It all depends on the sound, number of voices and the "knobiness" you're after...
